Day 23: Ethical Shopping. So you've looked around and cannot find any preloved / second-hand items. You need to purchase a piece of gear (most likely specialist) and want to ensure it is as ethical as possible = materials sourced - which preferred would be fibres made from old clothing / carbon emissions / using slave labour, etc.

How do you check up on companies and brands? Do you have a favourite site?

Ethical Consumer for starters - tend to focus on the big brands.

If the company is a small brand, eg Skye Weavers, who I've bought from; I read their website and decide that way.

Some other findings:

@WelshWomble - finds that eating properly means less packaging

@NightJar - needs a reusable mug to have at work (NJ if you pass my way, I seem to have plenty)

@SarahWoo - has reported that veg and fruit delivered by Sainsburys is now loose - Can you confirm what these were supplied in, e.g. a reusable box?

Day 24: Phones & Computers

Plastic of course is used in electrical appliances as it does not conduct electricity. Phones are one of those items that seems to be changed over regularly for the latest and greatest. Computers are also changed over pretty regularly. With regards to "recycling" councils have been sending electrical items to Africa - who has been known to extract the rare metals then burn the carcasses. Plastic when burned at low temperatures releases toxic gases and carcinogens. Sooo

1. What type of computer / phone would you get that lasts?
2. What do you do when your computer / phone is broken?

My phone has been "broken" for about 2yrs. Storage memory full, cracked screen with visible circuit boards (already had one new screen), slow Internet. But it "works". I can make and receive calls and mostly go online. I know I should get a new one but, well, it "works". Tbh with phones I'm more concerned about rare metals mined from geothermal vents than about plastics, but it's all still relevant.

Wombling Plodder (Welsh Womble)
Phone - I use mine until it dies and then donate to charity. Until now I had not thought about the afterlife.

Computer - again until it dies. Normally scrap it at local electrical waste so need to check what they do with it. I did donate one to a local group where young people take them apart and use spare parts for their projects. Will see if I can find out what they do with the bits.

Clothes - not brought much recently. I wear things until they fall apart and also donated half my wardrobe to the charity shop as they didn't fit. I need to replace my work suits as their life is running out fast plus I need something smart for job interviews so will check out the companies in more detail.

Thank you for opening my eyes, I was only on the edge of awareness.

Run free - the veg and fruit were loose in the crate - bananas, kiwis, peppers, onions, broccoli, carrots, baking potatoes.
