I'd happily sponsor a non-runner to run a race, but probably not a runner.
And I wouldn't pay either of their entry costs.

I'm not saying never. I can imagine situations in which I'd be happy to contribute a few quid to help make it possible for a runner to take part in a race even without the charity pledge. For example, a refugee who has been identified by their school or their local running club as having some talent but has no chance of even getting racing shoes, let alone getting to races, without funding.

If there was a race that needed fundraising to take part, I simply wouldn't do it. Unless it is an overseas marathon, nearly all races in this country are a lot less than £100. If travel and accommodation are the issue, then stick to something a lot closer to home.

Even if I went through a charity, and only needed to pay a nominal fee, I doubt I would raise enough. Despite upping the ante and making the challenges more difficult, people know I've done many marathons and are less likely to sponsor me as much, if at all.

I agree with both the points V'rap has made. If I was fundraising as part of some sort of running challenge and it would have to be a real challenge for me not the local 10k/race for life there is no way I would expect people offering sponsorship to also pay my costs of doing the event.

No way would I pay the entry fee unless there were very special circumstances such as those suggested by V'rap. I always pay my own entry and expenses when racing including when trying to raise money for a charity when running London.

Yep it’s a big far no from me

I’m also reluctant to sponsor people these days unless the charity is VERY good/close to me
So LMH will get macmillan money and vrap got money. The race isn’t a challenge for them but the charities are great

R4L nope never going to pay unless you are fighting cancer as 5k is not a challenge pretty much anyone can walk that (ok not my mother but I’m sure you understand)

I’ve got very picky so crowdfunding is a big no

Lots of race companies will give you a free place in return for volunteering so I’d much rather do that if I was skint.

This is the new 'I'll buy you a pint' culture. If people say they want to do a race, buy concert tickets or whatever, then asking people to chip in £3 towards it isn't seen as that weird. To me it feels weird, but it's no weirder than people going to a pub and having their friends buy them a drink. Rounds are an odd concept if you explain it in any other context.

It's all part of a circular economy - you need to be chipping in £3 towards other people's things. So it's perhaps a little like a mutual savings club. If you give £3 every two weeks to people, then you get £75 once a year when you request stuff.

It's not something I'd ever consider doing. But I understand the logic of how people in that culture work.

About This Thread

Something that cropped up in conversation the other day was paying for race entries. I’ve always paid by myself but my colleague suggested using go fund me or similar and adding a charity gift donation to the appeal. So he managed to pay for an entry to an event ( non running) and sending the surplus to the charity of his choice. What do you guys think of this? I feel uncomfortable about asking and also wondering if you’re left open to any kind of scam/ fraud?
