It's a young man's game these days, was talking with an experienced cyclist on a run, and he was expressing this view that it's no coincidence that Vingegaard, Hindley, Pogacar, you can add Bernal to this, are suddenly overturning the more conventional years of building up experience. I don't totally buy this as Ullrich was an exceptional youngster and Froome was a freak. He thought it was new training techniques and breakthroughs on the science, but it is an interesting point, that whereas young riders were protected from Grand Tours, they're now being thrown in them and winning. I was thinking the podium looks something like Pog, Vinge and Yates/Vlasov and haven't seen anything that changes my mind. I didn't buy Yates for my Veloleagues team as I wasn't sure how Covid might affect him. |

Bernal arrived before Roglic even if he's younger so... ...and Roglic has been better than the third step podium riders you named this season as well. You aren't really basing this on form even if you may turn out to be right for various reasons. |

I'm basing it on the races I've watched this season... (which admittedly is not all of them and may not be representative)

Where were Yates or Vlasov better?

It's more doubts on Roglic, and that Ineos have such a strong team that one of their three will be competitive for the podium. G was v impressive in Tour de Suisse although haven't seen him head to head with Roglic that recently.

Call it gut feel, which is often wrong of course, I had that feeling the year after G won the Tour that the next year he didn't look in the same form. I thought it was so unlucky last year that Roglic was injured and had to retire because I thought he had the wherewithall to take it to Pog, whereas this year not convinced.

Ok, well I went back and looked and Vlasov was better on one stage in the Tour of Basque Country but Roglic was great the next day by all accounts. velonews.com I don't think any of the Ineos guys will be strong enough in a straight fight but if I was making an argument for Roglic to be off the podium it would be that if Pogacar shows any weakness, Roglic riding well and with the time he's already lost would be the perfect rider as last man to set the tempo for Vingegaard to hurt Pogacar. |

Re Thomas I think it was clear Bernal was the better climber and Thomas wasn't winning like the year before. He still finished second whereas you're saying the Dauphine winner isn't good enough for the podium.

As you demonstrate, I'm not basing it on logic lol, just gut feel. Not the same, but I remember when Fuglsang won a tough Dauphine and was nowhere near the podium in 2017. Think he ended up crashing out, but wasn't going anywhere that year anyway. |

Itv4 just reported that Daniel oss went down and cracked vertebrae in his neck, yet rode on to finish yesterday's stage.... Needless to say he's not started today |
