The “facts” I’m stating are drawn directly from Starmer’s policy statements. Your fantasy of a progressive government is something you’ve made up out of thin air, seemingly based on things a different leader did 20 years ago.

Sadiq / Starmer are now publicly cooling on the idea of expanding ulez.

Londoners can’t have clean air because Starmer is afraid of not winning the sort of outer London seat that doesn’t go Labour even in a landslide.

Lack of commitment to action on climate change will prove - literally - fatal to some Londoners. And of course the air is full of pollutants from vehicles in the rest of the country too. The benefits of the policy need to be sold nationwide, perhaps a carrot is needed as well as a stick.

And before JB copies and pastes his list of Blair achievements for the 956th time, doing nothing about climate change is not an option. Radical measures are needed now. Look at the southern European heatwave, Greek islands on fire.

A common Tory message at the moment is “stop the small boats”. Why are people leaving for a new life? Often due to crop failure - caused by climate change. Often due to war - often caused by a scramble for resources - resources that are depleted due to climate change. The numbers will only increase as climate change increases.

Doing nothing is not an option, but unfortunately that is what Starmer is signalling at present.

Note that Starmer will not like Sadiq due to last political positions - eg voting against 2 child benefit cap.

Also a dislike of directly elected mayors, as their independence and autonomy takes power away from the tightly controlled centralised party machine, the locus of which is him.

I had a look at the ULEZ rules for Edinburgh which come in next June. Or the enforcement of charges do, apparently already in place.

The restricted zone is just the very centre really and so is no issue for many people and easy to avoid. I also checked both our cars and was surprised to find they were both ok anyway and could drive freely anyway. Well apart from the roads that are not available for cars already.

I am not sure why people are so against ULEZ. I do recall though that in Edinburgh we voted against a congestion charge and then ended up with the trams instead.

The News Agents podcast said that the Labour leadership (and those that have spoken have all been of the same mind) put Sadiq Khan in a no win position. They also said that it may have been better to just say it was local issue rather than come out essentially against it. The News Agents made the point that this doesn't have much bearing on the GE as people want the Tories out, what they are sure about is whether they want Labour to replace them.

Why don’t people like ULEZ? The only feasible answer I can give is right wing media with incorrect interpretation or then indirect conspiracy theories like 15 minute cities.

It makes little sense to me. It’s barely about net zero / climate change, it’s about improving the health of people and often the most vulnerable people at that.
