Shapps is that creep at work who can’t do his job for toffee but seems to get promotion after promotion because he has his head up the arse of every manager in the building. The whole of the government are, thats the problem. |

Thanks for setting that up Bazo. Chris - evidence, please, for the Tartan Tories remark? I would suggest to you that the SNP has had a broadly social democratic set of policies since taking power. The tartan tories thing goes way back to the early 1970's. Mitigating the two-child policy imposed on Scotland is currently costing the Scottish Government a fortune. But it's something many support - except for the Tories. Oh, and Labour now. You've made a ridiculous comment there. |

It's a little tongue in cheek, but more seriously I will point you to this article that I don't totally agree with: huffingtonpost.co.uk but does make this point about the SNP from 2015 (there are other examples, of SNP policies to the right): *** "A government and a party committed to a leftist conception of equality would, it would seem, be opposed to freezing council tax for everyone from struggling mums to millionaires, wouldn't it? This policy has led to a real terms cut in council service budgets - hardly a desired leftist outcome. Furthermore, the SNP have presided over the handing out of middle-class indulgences such as free university education and free prescriptions at the expense of the NHS and especially college places, the latter of which have been shown to be of particular use to those from low or lower-middle incomes." *** You will quite rightly point at the second part and say - well Corbyn backed some of the things like "free university education", and I will point to the bit where I have said in the past words to the effect... "While I back free university education, it isn't a priority for a left wing government, and it effectively is targeted for the middle classes and not those most in need" - in fact the Corbyn-led opposition ALSO wouldn't remove the 26,000 benefits cap either. (See - theguardian.com ) , which led me to brand them, "basically to the right of the SDP". So Corbyn's lot were basically orangers in disguise a lot of the time with a side order of nationalisation on the side. Does this make me a raving commie? No. But over time, the Overton window has moved so far to the right that my mainstream Labour/social demoratism of the 80s seems now to be the left of Corbyn, SNP, Lib Dems etc etc. |

I support universal benefits. That’s a left of centre position, as I understand it. The freeze on council tax was supposed to be a precursor to reform - which has not happened. This is a glaring policy error but I wouldn’t say it makes the SNP right wing. The article refers to the two main prongs of attack the SNP has faced over the last 15 years from Labour and Tories. So far, this has been an abject failure on their part as the SNP have won every election, whether Holyrood or Westminster. It will be interesting to see what happens at the GE election when Labour propose removing benefits from people. Will people vote to pay for things tjey are used to getting free at the point of delivery? For me, that’s the issue in Scotland. |

It's not even continuity Blair from Starmer, it's continuity Sunak. I could vote for Blair despite his faults. As posted here regularly, he delivered a decent amount of stuff.

Out of character but I will come to the support of SurelyNot here. SNP are a left of centre party and they are certainly left of the current labour and arguably left of a standard labour as well - if not broadly in the same space. However, there is clearly a right wing element and a more central section of the SNP and in fact if you look at the numbers then c30% of the SNP support also supported Brexit and would not support a join the EU policy. On the council tax point, the freezing of council tax did seem out of line, but we are now seeing a consultation on some pretty hefty increases to the top 4 bands which is more in line with what we would expect to see, |

What is interesting though is that for all that SNP are left wing, they would rather see a Tory government in Westminster as that they believe is the best route to Independence. The current labour movement is playing into the SNP hands though giving more credence to the red tories accusation and this they are desperately using to try and shore up their support

I recall reading that certain elements in the SNP had a fairly relaxed view towards Nazi Germany back in the day. Enemy’s enemy is my friend kind of thing.

Which is to say, however anti-capitalist/anti-communist/anti-English you may be, you should never go Full Nazi. Or, indeed, Full Putin in a contemporary context. |
