I'm gonna call it a florid simile. Or is it a metaphor, I get confused.

I think it might be a metaphor. "Love is a battlefield" is a metaphor.

"The older generation is at war with the younger generation". Not intended literally. Or was it?

Yes, metaphor. As you were.

One image of this metaphorical war is of a large sleepy turtle nestling comfortably on the sand while a red face little boy hammers on it shell and yammers ineffectively.

My generation is guilty of culpable negligence, but I suspect that in very few cases was there malicious intent. Most of us wanted to make the world a better place, and in some respects we did help bring this about, but we neglected many unintended consequences of our activity, most notably with regard to fuelling climate change.

Similarly, I suspect that few of the people voting for Brexit did it with malicious intent. In part it was misguided view of what would be good for the country, and in part it was culpable gullibility.

Don’t think I could speak for my generation other than to say the older they get, the more impatient and less reflective their thinking often is.
It seems to be a trait backed by some studies eg. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

Shrinking frontal lobes sadly changing thought patterns.

Some of the Brexit feeling I put down to a kind of small r racism - a belief the the U.K. is white, speaks the queens English and Christian and outsiders are tolerated but interracial society is not really accepted.

To call any of this a war though is still silly.

Simbil, it is worth noting that the findings in that study supported earlier research demonstrating that older adults are more prejudiced than younger adults despite similar levels of motivation to be non-prejudiced.

This leaves the issue of what can be done to diminish the disproportionate influence of the elderly on political decisions. The first step in a democratic society is for the young to vote, but this is only the first step. Despite loss of cognitive flexibility, the views of the elderly are not utterly fossilised. How can their attitudes and behaviour be changed? Shame rarely helps change, but identification of specific bad actions can be the starting point for change.

So the Sue Gray thing has clearly backfired, any views from the Starmer Fanclub?

The 8:10 interview on Today worth catching, a discussion of predatory men targeting women that everyone should listen to.

Also a welcome change to not have politicians in this slot.

You seem to be very combative for an anti-war person, Fields. Dissing people on other threads when they have no immediate right of reply is not cool, btw.

The Sue Gray thing has been brought up by Boris supporting tories to try to distract people from the more serious issue of a PM breaking the rules (it "may" have breached Whitehall's rules). As is often the case the right wing tories have found themselves supported by the far left.

Yep. The far left hate Starmer much more than your average Tory. Sad.
