I saw something on Steven Colbert's instagram encouraging Georgia voters to check the status of their ballots - I think there a thing in Georgia where postal ballots that are missing information and risk being discounted can be 'rectified' or somesuch via a secure online portal (which begs the question of why can't the votes be done that way n the first place, but that's for another day's pointless debate) - and the deadline is this afternoon local time, meaning the count can't be finalised until at least then?

You know what?
If I got an email from election officials telling me that there was something wrong with my ballot paper and would I like to double-check it, I'd be mightily suspicious as well.
I'm not happy with the whole writing a number against my name thing that happens in UK polling stations.

Raemond: I believe the number of ballots needing to be "cured" is a few hundred. It's possible but unlikely it's going to make a difference given the way it's leaning so far.

Pro-trumpers are really leaning into that "curing" process as evidence of post-election vote casting. I can see why an adversary would say that "if you didn't cast it right first time, why should you get a chance to correct it", but that opportunity to cure could be as beneficial to Trump as to Biden in a narrow state - it wouldn't surprise me if more "archetypal" Trump advance voters got something wrong on their form and the classicly stereotyped middle class Dem.

I don't think they get an email from anyone, DeeGee, I think they have details to log into the portal and check the status of their own ballot, which is why people like Colbert are encouraging them to do it becaue otherwise their vote will be discounted.
But, as Nellers points out, if it's only a few hundred then it won't change the outcome. I was just thinking that it might mean that they can't officially declare the result until after whatever the deadline is for people to do that.

Deegee, you realise that this is a safeguard to ensure people cannot vote twice, and the corresponding lists will never be matched with the ballot papers unless subject to a court order which has never happened. No one in the polling station cares how you vote. I get sick of being asked this when I work in them.

So, an interesting quirk.
If Biden holds AZ, NV, GA and takes PA after all votes counted, and Trump holds on in NC and wins AK when it's projected, then the final pledged electoral college count will be 306-232.
Trump won in 2016 232-306 (Faithless electors reduced the actual cast votes 304-227 officially).

And the potential anti-democratic nightmare (small d) has reared its head in that some Republicans (inc Lindsay Graham: "nothing is off the table") have raised the prospect that the state legislatures should instead of following the popular vote in each state, should appoint electors to re-elect Donald Trump - particularly in AZ and GA where they hold the legislature and Governorships.
It still wouldn't be enough to give Trump 270, but would set a dangerous precedent and would cause a huge uproar on both sides I suspect. Which probably include some violence.

I believe there are also a few of us still in play on the "predictions" table. If Dvorak wins I will consider lodging an official complaint to Lord Fetch as regards the spread betting going on. Clearly some illegality there.
