I like Keir but a talented leader is not effective in a disunited party. 9pc isn’t a stand out position but Labour need to do more than change the lead, they need to stand behind it. That’s the bigger challenge.

The left are and always have been a small subsection. Remember Corbyn only needed a few nominations to stand, and he couldn't even get that? And then when all the cabinet resigned, he ran out of mps to fill his new shadow cabinet with?? The up side of the 2019 result, is that it's got rid of a fair few Corbynites, and not added any new ones... Yes there have been some retirees - like Tom Watson, who got replaced by Tories anyway. It will be easier to run a disunited party from the moderate left by quite some way, than from the Corbynite left. You just ignore them... |

I do not think Labour has even been united, not should it be. But at present, the evidence suggests that more than 50% of the membership would probably support a moderate left leader. I suspect that proportion will increase as the evidence regarding the reasons for the poor showing on 12th Dec become clearer and more widely accepted. A small minority on the hard left will remain steadfast in their hard left views, but they will be marginalised provided the NEC does not find a way to dilute the influence of the membership . |

I see Long-Bailey is 3rd from bottom in the list of favourites. Now if she could only lose a couple of places, she'll be a shoo-in for the post.

Concrete evidence of another bit of the British political system in need of reform.
