Three years at the Red Lion Caravan Park in Arbroath when wee, with trips on the mini-train along the prom (now location of West Links parkrun). St Andrews one year inbetween.

Then we went exotic with caravans in Silloth, Spittal, and Southerness. But no more family holidays after I was eight, due to an aged grandfather at home.

I had no holidays I can recall until I was 11 or 12 when my dad decided to drive us to the south of France.

I’m not going to play 4 Yorkshiremen but as a child my entire experience of holidays was visiting grandparents who to be fair lived in fairly pleasant places and sleeping on the couch (with one set) was comfortable enough.

Then a special treat was a foreign holiday for each of us as we left school (south of France for me).

Once I started travelling with work I hardly ever went on a foreign holiday per se, they were added on to business trips that just happen to be to places like Nice, Vienna, Honolulu, San Francisco, Sydney :-)

My dad was a farmworker, so couldn't take holidays during school holidays due to harvest ... bonus was that we went away before the schools broke up! Two weeks, first week would be a self-catering flat in places like Bridlington, Skegness, Morecambe, Llandudno then second week at my nan's in north London. For little country bumpkins, we were pretty well travelled and far more familiar with the icons of London (eg red double decker buses and the Underground) than our friends!

We had a few holidays when I was little. My parents took me to Jersey when I was 18 months old. I only know that one from the photos. We had several visits to Pontins holidays camps.

My first trip abroad was a school ski trip to Leysin in Switzerland when I was 13. It was great!

We didn't have holidays as a children but I do remember my first holiday the year after I started work. Butlins in Skegness. I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread!

Stilldreaming, you’ve reminded me that, living in the South London suburbs, we’d buy a Red Bus Rover ticket and travel all over London all day during the school holidays.

I’ve never been to Butlins but have a cousin who has spent his entire working life at Butlins Skegness. He must be near retirement by now, if not already retired.
