Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

57.5 Degrees of Pain
I had a dodgy shoulder from too much adolescent cricket (enthusiastic throwing and leg spin bowling). Learned to play a crafty squash game to protect the shoulder but didn't play enough as years went on to keep the required muscles from hurting for days. Decided hockey and cricket with diminished reflexes might mean a hard ball damaging fingers... not good for a dentist!

Only fallen over running twice with enough force to impact my working.

Dvorak's Olympic inspiration reminds me of a summers day I spent in 'Olympic' competition with two friends who were brothers. Probably aged 11 or 12, no training of course.

We must have done about 12 events in garden and street. Younger of the brothers was the biggest and most athletic of us (and ended up as an accomplished hockey player) and won all but two. I won the triple jump, the other (unathletic) brother won the standing jump.

I think the longest run might have been around our block, about 600m with a couple of hills.

I could barely move for DOMS in every muscle of my body the next day!

I've never been good at ball sports or team games. I started canoeing when I was 12 with the scouts and within a year gave up scouts because it got in the way of canoeing, which I don't think was their plan. Raced at a reasonable but not outstanding level through until I was late 20s when child 1 arrived.

At my peak I was doing distance races at about the same level as GB international women, so if you equate that to running I was "decent club level" I suppose. As a junior I was probably top 3 in my county but remember my PE report from school saying "Neil is not a natural athlete and probably never will be", which was a little blinkered I'd suggest. I just wasn't good at the school curriculum of football, rugby and cricket.

Child one in '97 stopped all that and by the time my 40th was fast approaching I'd really done no exercise for over a decade so started trying to run a bit, and I'm still here.

57.5s mention of triple jump reminds me of failing to even reach the pit at a school sports day. I never did have any bouncy fast twitch muscle fibres!!!

Oh the memories of summer holidays. They start earlier here in Scotland and would start with tennis in the street as we watched Wimbledon.

Then the open was on and the golf clubs would be dusted down.

Then there would be cricket as we watched the test matches.

Our street was on a hill and when formula one was on we would race various contraptions down the street.

When play was rained off we would sit in the garage and okay board games.

We also had an occasional relay race if athletics had been on the telly.

Luckily we were too tired to stay up late enough to watch the boxing.

As boredom set in later in the holidays we would venture on an expedition to the pentland hills. No one worried about where we were and it was amazing how long we could last without food or drink. Tea was always getting served as we arrived back.

We did the Wimbledon thing as well. We used to do street olympics too. We lived in a new scheme and lots of children of all ages and even the parents used to join in....oh happy days :-)

I caught a trout on one of those pentlands trips. We saw it and I dipped a hook in the water near it and it only went and bit. I pull this thing out the water and have no idea what to do next. Luckily a passing walker managed to de-hook it and put it back from whence it came.
