Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

We all know that the *proper* olympic sports are the running, jumping, chucking, swimming and cycling.

All the others don't count. ;-)

Although it is patently stupid that some sports are being included that are arguably not really sports, yet others continue to be excluded.

Squash in particular, but other examples exist

There was a discussion about what should/shouldn't be an olympic sport on a Podcast I was listening to last week. Their conclusion seemed to be broadly that if the Olympics isn't the biggest thing to win in that sport it shouldn't be in there, so Golf, Tennis, Road Cycling, for example, shouldn't be there but potentially Breaking, trampolining, Synchro Swimming would be fine. Not sure how Squash would fall by that methodology.

Football is clear piss take.

Golf and tennis don't have a world championships....

It becomes a somewhat subjective decision about what constitutes the biggest thing in the sport as well.

The other element to consider is that some sports have 'amended' versions to get them into the Olympics. Rugby being the example there - should that be allowed? Should there be 2 versions of basketball? Yet no netball...

In the end it comes down to a lot of politics.

But it is frustrating!

Squash will be at 2028. Plus baseball/softball, cricket, flag football and lacrosse.

There's even more variety bidding for 2032, including of more relevance here, trail running. And one surely to get some grinding of teeth, ..., life saving.

Obviously chess should be included. Whether the Olympic event is the biggest or not is something that may evolve over time.

I know a few of the local life saving team here....

But like orienteering it is a niche sport. But it *is* a sport...

All of those being included for 2028 are 'optional' meaning they could be dropped for 2032.

Surfing though is being promoted to a 'core' sport....

About This Thread

Maintained by Curly45
Couldn't find a thread so thought I would start one.

Who else is off to watch or who is watching at home?

We're doing Lille and Paris and a mix of sports. Currently trying to find travel insurance that includes ticket cancellation as some of the trains in the UK might be difficult and we have some internal French trains to do as well.

Also need to work out the new Paris metro ticket/app combo (Navigo I think).
