Also women's football is a professional game and they want yo win the Olympics so, as ever, it is not about representation, it is about winning, so you pick your best players.

Sushi.
Thank you Larkin. That makes sense.

So equally it could be one of the other GB countries teams if they did best with a few players selected from other teams.

It initially read as English 'elitism' but those rules around selection sound sensible and of course the idea is to win

Football is not the only Olympic sport for which you could consider it’s not the ‘pinnacle’. How about golf? Road cycling?

Golf may not yet have the status, but it's the best players in the world at the competition. They've got a short journey to go on similar to tennis where it's definitely considered to be right up there in that the best players want to be there and the best ones win.

And I'm pretty sure the Olympic road cycling race is considered at the top of the pile, albeit with teams constructed on a national basis rather than through the commercial / professional teams. I might be wrong but it feels like it's no less important that the cycling world champs?

Beyond the limitations of national representation, are there any other olympic disciplines than football where limitations on participants are imposed which exclude the best in the world from competing? Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree!!

Tennis? Baseball? Basketball?

Can't think of any more myself.

I would have thought the Grand Tours are in front of the olympics, World champs maybe as regards road cycling.

Winning the World Surf League arguably more prestigious than Olympic glory as it's over a number of competitions and is the thing that drives athlete sponsorships etc.

Perhaps I'm being too athletics-centric with my view about the Olympics being the pinnacle. Anyway, the age limitation still annoys me ;-)

British medal hope Amber Hill has withdrawn from the women's skeet competition at this summer's Olympics after testing positive for Covid-19.

World number one Hill won silver at the shooting World Cup in May and finished sixth at the Rio 2016 Games.

I’m looking forward to the athletics, especially the sprints and middle distance events, because I probably understand those the best.

I feel really sad for the athletes, families and Japanese people that these won’t be the kind of Olympics that open up a new country and culture to the world and offer all the hard to measure intangible benefits that come from it. Having visited Japan twice myself, it remains a country that I heartily recommend to the curious traveller.
