It didn't take a lot of work. I just threw my leaf mold from two years ago on it over the new year. The worms sorted it all out....

OS, sadly this bed had perennialised chard in it, so the root clumps need digging out and there is a fair bit of grass that has sprung up over winter.
Then I shall loosen the soil with a hand azada. Then plant the onions.
Then spread an inch of home made compost over the bed.

I need to stick to this bed for the onions as I rotate them to avoid onion white rot.

I have three beds, so it's time to give onions a miss next year....remind me! I might put onion sets in with the flowers :-) .

You can do that! I always leave some to flower!

Second lot of tomatoes and cucumbers in on the windowsill! A useful lunchtime (that doesn't involve decorating, or work!). The first lot of tomatoes are just about onto their "true leaves" whilst the cucumbers are onto their second set!

All good for the soul. :-)

I should be able to get the broccoli in this weekend too.

My best clump of snake's head fritillaries. eL Bee! did a head count and the ones in the swamp lawn have definitely multiplied. In the lawn that is merely wet, we have three out of the 75 I planted. I've also got some older ones doing really well in a flowerbed despite having been buried under cardboard and bark chippings, but they're still just foliage. They got to around 80cm high last year, which was slightly unexpected.

Mine come up at a very random different timing!
And 3 out of 75 sounds about right.
I think they take years to establish as my oldest patch now looks positively impressive.
May take some photos...

Fragile Do Not Bend
I planted some in an area where there is often some standing water at this time of year, they came up once and no sign since. Can an area be too wet for them?

FDNB, no I wouldn't have so. In the wild they thrive in water meadows - i.e. grassland which is regularly flooded by surrounding rivers.
