I've also had medals made (laser on wood) for running clubs and also virtual events. Smaller companies like the one I use are happy to do smaller amounts etc.

I kind of think medals are tat. I wasn't bothered when I did road races and most of my T&F stuff is for leagues so no medals. However there are medals at the national and regional meets I go to. (Went to) I stopped bothering to pick them up and took a load to give back last year thinking they could at least be recycled - bronze, silver, gold so not dated. One organiser was a bitty iffy (WHY, FFS!) but they did take them.

So definitely I'd go for cheaper races! Even if it is a very small reduction.

Som's wooden medals look special and cute so they're excused.

I like medals, but they're not make-or-break for me.

A couple of times I've done a race organised by dserunners.com who give every finisher a fancy ribbon, about the size of a bookmark, e.g. facebook.com

Probably cheaper/quicker, and just as decorative.

I suspect many people would appreciate a (nice) wooden medal not least because its different from the ton of metal medals they've already got. Having said that I'd be happy not to receive any kind of medal, though I would suggest making sure it's clear on the entry form.

I'd rather have nothing and an event survive than a medal and not see the event again

I like a mug, a buff and other things I'll actually use.

Had a few lovely wooden, fabric or other craft medals or mementoes. But those are usually small, local or other low key, low number events. :-) G

I didn't like medals or t-shirts...unless it was a 'big' race. (Although I appreciate that my 'small' race might well be someone else's 'big' race)

Something to eat, on the other hand...

I do like a medal and it doesn't have to be a fancy bespoke one either. Maybe because I have been interested in what my parents or their parents did. At the moment, they go in a box in the loft but I hope that they might be something that my future grandchildren will take some joy in looking at.

About This Thread

I've just about recovered from a fantastic weekend organising an event.

Before the pandemic, people were keen to sign up early, by the summer I had plenty of funds in the event account and I could buy medals with impunity.

Since the pandemic, entries appear to come in a lot later. I was listening to one of the guys running this weekend and he was boasting of how he only ever enters events the week before so he gets to keep the money in his account rather than the race organisers.
