Cph vas flat and nice, a little crowded with narrow streets and so on. A lot of spectators since you run around in the city center, and good over all i must say with the administration and logistics.

What I liked about Rotterdam was that I left my house on Saturday morning, arrived in Rotterdam at lunchtime, spent the afternoon picking up numbers and exploring, ran Sunday morning and was back at Schiphol airport by teatime for my journey home. It's one of only two big foreign marathons I can do without taking any time off work, the other one being Amsterdam.

What I didn't like was the fact that I get "travel tummy" and didn't have time to recover before the race!

It was a hot day that day, pleasant enough race, with all the big hits sightseeing-wise at the beginning and the end, but big tracts of not very much for most of the race.

I loved Split in February, which isn't pancake flat but isn't too troubling with gradient as there's a lot of the race alongside the Adriatic and Split is an incredible little city.

I'm guessing you've done Riga, HoD?

In Germany, Freiburg is in late March, Regensburg and Wurzburg this year on May 29. All smaller German cites, well worth a visit.

In Regensburg and Wurzburg, the marathon is two laps of the half course. Regensburg also has quarter and three-quarter marathons.

As for weather ... I ran both halves. Regensburg was overcast, 7-12°C. Wurzburg was bright sunshine, 21-25°C. About 29 when the later marathoners were finishing. So it's just your Donald Duck.

So, anyway.

Yesterday evening I got an email from NYRR inviting me to take part in their virtual NYC Marathon.

I wouldn't normally bother, and I've got my big city race this year, but this one piqued my interest.

For $189 entry fee, by completing the virtual marathon during the time frame, I can secure myself a guaranteed place in the 2023 event. Obvs, I still have to pay the entry fee for that event.

Actually, when looking at the expense of NYC, knowing 18 months in advance that I will definitely be in the race could easily save me more than $189.

So that's what I did. Just got to move my arse 26.2 miles in one sitting during the first weekend of November, now...

Possibly considering a long-overdue return to Enigma Fireworks, although I have also promised myself that one day I'll run from my house to either Lincoln or Hull, which'll meet the distance criteria too.

That's a huge entry fee to run 42.2km by yourself. I realise the attraction of guaranteed entry next year. The downside is that if you don't pay up the 189USD to run alone, there will be fewer ballot places.

I hope very much this does not become common practice: that races force you to pay for a virtual race to stand a chance of running the real thing a year later (and paying again).

That was my fear

Agreed. Although it's much cheaper than having to pay £2.5k to be able to run the London marathon, which is what most folk have to resort to.

I have a feeling it's first-come-first-served and the places are limited, as they didn't confirm back to me instantly.
