Just back from one of my periodic visits to the wonderful Sharon, a woman whose knowledge of the human musculature has to be experienced to be believed.

My legs are tingling - possibly because she put some ginger extract in the oil. All the bits which were tight, are now loose. She has released "blockiness" or "chunkiness" in both calves, my right hamstring, my left adductor and piriformis and in my lower back. She found some in places I didn't know there was a problem. I feel worn out and ready to sleep.

And all for £20 - total bargain.

What's your experience of sports massage?

Didn't work unless the objective was to leave me with lots of fingertip bruises.

I get a massage every couple of weeks and really think that it helps. Mine is £30 for an hour and worth every penny.

I really get the benefit of them. I tend to go if I have a niggle rather than just for regular treatment. But I've found that by asking questions, I've learned a lot about my own body and key things to watch out for.

I've had a few different people give me sports massage and in my experience, you definitely know when you've got the right person.

My guess is that the cost is location dependent. I paid £30 for a half hour massage at the VMLM Expo. I get a full hour from Sharon for my £20.

I've had confidence in Sharon from the first time I went.

I use The Stick, a tennis ball and a foam roller and find them possibly more effective than a professional massage, but I'm not sure I've found the right masseur. But far less of a pleasant experience.

A necessary part of running...and their worth depends on the masseuse...the more painful they are ,the better they are - sadly

Mine operates by stealth. She starts off with gentle stroking and smoothing, while chatting away.... then all of a sudden I notice that the firmness has become tenderness has become out and out pain. And then I'll say "ouch" or something along those lines, and she'll go "mmm, it's just there" while pressing on the ouchiest bit. She can obviously feel something different in the bits which are tender.

They are usually a bit less tender by the time she's done.... but later on, I feel tired and a bit like I've gone a few rounds with Nicola Adams.
