Both are albums where I could 'sing' the whole thing from beginning to end if I were to hear the first note. 'Surprise, some times will come around...'

I need to make a choice for 2005 next, so had a quick browse for Fitz's choice (Sufjan Stevens, Illinios). I'm intrigued as to how my media player will handle some of those track names. Track #2 is titled The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself in the Morning, or, We Apologize for the Inconvenience but You're Going to Have to Leave Now, or, 'I Have Fought the Big Knives and Will Continue to Fight Them Until They Are Off Our Lands!

The name Surfan Stevens has always suggested to me a cross between Shaky and the Beach Boys.

Throw in an acoustic guitar or two and that's about right.

With regards to the Arctic Monkeys, I have and love both Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not and AM, but have never even listened to anything of theirs in between. nothing deliberate in that, it's just the way it's worked out.

Arcade Fire and Arctic Monkeys are two bands that on paper tick all the boxes for me but I just couldn't get into them although I did rate Reflecktor.
I quite like Sufjan Stevens with his 2015 release Carrie and Lowell being a favourite of mine.
I'll now go back to my last post and pick up my year from now on.

Carrie and Lowell is a lovely lp, "death with dignity" in particular is one of the most haunting songs I've heard, and a real rarity, the words are as strong as the music. I saw Sufjan playing 3rd on the bill in Birmingham, he played 7 songs unadorned, just him and banjo, but before he did, he stacked up beer crates, got a large white sheet of paper out and giant marker pen and proceeded to explain where all the songs took place, and lots of extra stories about his family. Whole audience totally enrapt, not sure I've seen many better gigs, quite how he wasn't headlining that day (he was arguably bigger than the other two on the bill even then), I'm not sure. He played "Romulus" that night, and when he sang the line about "I was ashamed of her", I swear every heart in room cracked.

I returned with Garbage's 1998 release 2.0
Aptly named as it was rubbish.

I picked up again in 1977 with Pink Flag, by Wire. If I’d first heard it in 77, then I might have liked it. In 2018 I didn’t get past track 3. I moved on to Randy Newman’s Little Criminals which I expected to like a lot more than I did. I found the tone and tempo of the songs a bit tedious when heard one after the other.
