A lad in my old cycling club was beating Cavendish, Thomas and Martin as juniors and is now a hospital doctor in Southampton. Of course in his case, the alternative to racing was at the time (about 2003) a far better bet so not getting onto Team Persil, as was, wasn't the end of the world for him at all. There was a good piece about the fly half who kept Jonny Wilkinson out of the England U18 (or some other relatively high age group) team but got there through talent not hard work... and that story ends as you'd expect.

I agree that Sky are not a charity, nor are BC, but like RM above I can quote examples of people that have not progressed as had been expected. Indeed the brother of one 2015 TdF rider was more succesful at an early age but has not turned full pro while the rider that has was lauded for his early season result and current "leadership qualities". Indeed that brother made a cameo appearance as a boxer on caerphilly mountain during the ToB a few years ago. Luke,s brother Matt, in case you were wondering.
