He is also, to give him his due, a damn good RD who puts on a classic event, does it really well, and donates 10s of £1000s to local charity from the proceeds. I find that if I avoid facebook and the his race briefings he's quite bearable

I've heard from several sources that all he does is "encourage" other people to use the race as a vehicle to raise money and in practical terms does not donate a penny himself. This certainly was the case a few years ago, but if that's changed I would be agreeably surprised and of course happy to be corrected. My observation has been that he would skin a flea for its hide.
