I’ve seen people in sandals attempt it but it’s trail shoes for me for the rock plate and ankle support. Race numbers are up on Results Base, starting to feel imminent. resultsbase.net |

To be honest, reflecting on the process of kit check, eight times since 2010, not once has anybody enquired about footwear. But I welcome the clarification from Dave.

I did the 50 in parkclaws, sort of road to trail/trail-lite really, last year, but I had alternatives on stand by in case it rained the day before/on the day/threatened to rain. I’d do it in them again this year if the new model weren’t slightly narrower than my old pair |

Lakeland kit check is always thorough, sometime to the point of ridiculous depending on who you get*, but I've never had my footwear checked in roughly 10 starts. I know people who've started it in Xero sandals (but not known anyone finish in them, which may help with the choice!). I've run the last few in trailtalons which probably have less cushioning/protection than road shoes, and not much more grip! * esp getting pedantic about Paramo Velez as they can't see any taped seams. |

Kit check is the least of my worries this year, I seem to have managed to get to this point with one loop over Latrigg as my only ‘hill training’ My number this year is almost the same as last, alphabetical by first name?? 600 in the 100 and 1700 in the 50 this year, about the same as last? |

Since 2010 I've been in Coniston at the last weekend in July every year, bar 2012 and 2020. Probably the most enjoyable was when I was a marshall. |

I'm pretty sure that me and Mrs JD will not be starting LL100. We planned to run from Coniston to Buttermere yesterday to test our injuries, and pace. We were way off the pace, and missed the bus from Buttermere, so had to continue on to Keswick. We have missed too much training, and the pandemic had kept us away from the Lake District for quite a while, so we are too slow over rough ground. So my swan song ultra is off. The bilberries above Grassguards were delicious, and there were more dragonflies than I have ever seen, but the horseflies were attacking in swarms to provide some balance. |

that’s a shame I’ve had very little rough ground practice, thankfully the 50 is easier ground than the first half, but I’m starting to stress about lack of hills and rougher trails. |

I think the cut offs are much more generous in the 50, and there is definitely less rough ground. It really seems we are lacking technical skills, partly down to lack of recent practice, and part mental stuff, especially given my wife's fairly recent ankle sprain. She just seems to have become really cautious, where she just wasn't in the past. |

Understandable - it takes a while to get confidence back and ankles don’t like rough treetment. Shame you can’t drop down to the 50 and have a nice day out. |
