You knit summat in wool. Loosely(ish) and bigger than you want. Then stick it in the washing machine at 95 degrees and it 'felts' - becomes thick and slightly woolly.

Ideal for bags and slippers. Type in 'felting' in Rav.

Tis like magic! I only put it in at 40 degrees, and it worked well, without turning the beret into something dolly size.

It is very very good at masking any imperfections in your work.

I am very excited at having finished my first sock! It's come out quite big, which is fine because it's for wearing as a slipper substitute. Now I'm wondering whether I could felt it but I'm fairly sure it's not 100% wool so the answer is probably no.

The other one is well underway too :-) I made good progress on the plane and had no problem taking my hooks (metal, 2.5mm & 3mm) through security at Heathrow.

brilliant stuff, toks! (i assume you mean some circular needles ;)) you can knit hats on straight needles and have one seam if you want to.

i'm getting drawn in by the wollmeise thing - but i mustn't!!

i've been frogging AGAIN today. my own fault, i just launched into a pair of lacy fingerless gloves that i've knitted before without properly checking the sizing i'd used last time or thinking about the fact it was different wool and it came out huge! gah! but i'd sewn it up before i realised.

the ones i've already done were made using biggan wool, which is a really lovely merino wool from australia. they are single colours only, but really beautiful shades.

and i've made a bit more headway with the hat (ha!ha!). getting used to the circular needles but not feeling the love, yet.

i hung some new bedroom curtains today but forgot to check the width when i was pulling the tape strings in. i have a 6 inch gap down the middle of each window :-o :)

farnham pilgrim marathon in the morning so if i'm still awake i'll be reknitting the glove all afternoon :)

Runnyeyes, welcome :) :) :)

That's great, Toks :) I would love to have a class to go to.

I'm completely scrambled trying to choose Wollmeise colours. I want ALL of them. Suppose I should pop my sock cherry first ;)

My "second" second sleeve is coming along well and I'm looking forward to having a snuggly merino jumper to wear and getting started on my next thing. The commissioned item first, then my daughters have gone from "Ick, I don't want you to make me any knittings" to lining up a queue of requests for hats, cardigans and blankets. And I want to make something for eL Bee!, and I have so many patterns for little baby things ... and some Colinette wool that I bought on eBay and when it arrived I thought, "Ugh, what's THIS?" but it'll be perfect for felting ...

I have bederoom curtains a bit like that, RD. They were listed on eBay as being 60" wide. I assumed that was per curtain. It wasn't, but they're lovely unusual vintage ones and I got them for about a fiver and our window is just under 60" wide so I just put them up almost ungathered.

apologies, runnyeyes, i forgot to say hello!

i will have to ungather them tomorrow, v'rap, i couldn't summon the energy tonight.

daughter has been showing great interest in a mochimochi mad animal which is a moose with lots of tiny birds in his antlers. so i think i'm going to attempt to make him for a fun pressie. but i'm struggling to find yarn all from the same make in the right colours. do you think it matters? i've found the right colours for the birds in patons dreamtime dk but they don't do the brown and beige for the moose. i think it's best that the brown and beige are the same wool as they are knitted together, but the birds are just sewn on to the antlers. any thoughts anyone?

oh, and i don't want to spend a fortune...

I think you could safely use a variety of yarns provided you follow the washing instructions of the least washable, RD :)
