M4P - Am I correct in thinking that your Moorland blanket is from Attic 24 website? Are you doing it for a single or double bed?

That's right Anty, I'm doing single sized although I don't think it'll end up on a bed, more evening TV snuggles. I'm debating the next think after the moorland and mermaid, whether to do the moorland in a different colour. I have a new mum friend from E 5.5's class and she wants to learn to crochet, so I've offered my services, she's coming round this week. I'm thinking stitches and granny square first then move on from there. |

I'm learning how to crochet. I went to my second workshop yesterday and took the granny stripe pattern with me. *Trumpets* FINALLY I can now do the granny stripe pattern without assistance I really like the moorland colour chart which is why I was asking. But I think I'll probably do the suggested colour pattern for the granny stripe and then do the moorland blanket afterwards! I think I read somewhere that someone was initially concerned that the starting chain would be too small, but once you start crocheting it seems to "grow". Is this correct or should I just measure the width of my double duvet and then do enough chains in multiples of 3 + 2 to equate to that size? Which one is the mermaid pattern? |

I think Lucy has put suggested sizes for double beds in the instructions For Moorland. Though this might not help if you use granny stripe. It might be best to do a sample first, do several rows until you get an even gauge (if you're a beginner it will likely change a lot until you relax), and measure it to see how much you need to cast on.

Good going Red Ant I think I'm almost up to where you are with granny squares and I'm also contemplating the moorland blanket. I've been following M4P's progress with it and am itching to give it a try

And Meglet I think you're absolutely correct. My tension seems variable at the moment so I'll persevere with practise squares until I can get more consistent

Well done on the granny stripe, it is lovely. I do a foundation row (working the chain and first row stitch together) instead chain and then the stitch so I get a better idea of width doing that than a chain initially, I find it easier and a neater finish. Some people do the chain with a slightly larger hook to make it easier to go in to. yarnutopia.com/2015/04/29/how-to-crochet-video-tutorial-mermaid-tail-afghan-pattern-3-sizes-small-child-medium-teen-large-adult/ mermaid |

This is all great! I was told yesterday about the foundation row. I might give that a try. In the meantime I might keep practising to try to get a consistent sizing and then if I can't do the foundation row I'll do what Meglet suggests SusiesueH it's great isn't it Awesome mermaid pattern |

I do the chain with a large hook, and often the first row too. Also you can do more chain than you need (useful if it's a very large number) and undo the few you don't use.
