As chozz by Little Nemo, the first book of Phase Five of our chozzes.

Octavia E. Butler's ground-breaking masterpiece, with an original foreword by Ayobami Adebayo.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor metadata from publisher

This item cost $9.75. For an eBook at that price, you would think that the publisher would have the common decency to create metadata with the correct Author Name. This publisher, however, has very sloppily created metadata which lists the author (for Kindle sorting purposes) under her first name rather than her last name. And, since the book is an AZW1 file (the "dreaded Topaz" format), it is impossible to correct this sloppy publisher metadata using mobi2mobi.

For that reason, I have given the eBook the lowest possible "star" rating. Note that I am not criticizing the actual literary content of the book, and the author obviously should not be faulted (since she's been dead for a couple of years). The fault is entirely the publisher's.

Idiots.

Ooh, am I first? I don't think that's ever happened.

I loved this. It reminded me of The Time Traveler's Wife, which is one of my favourite books (though obvs written ages after). I found the set-up really easy to follow, and wanted to know what happened next. The characters were well-drawn and mostly believable and the idea of seeing a culture of a specific time from the pov of a future time, though obviously not original, worked really well. If I have to criticise, sometimes the writing was a bit clunky, and I think there could have been more focus on Kevin and Dana's relationship - he was a bit sketchily drawn. I would have liked to have known more about what he did in the five years he was in the past without her. But these are minor criticisms. I really enjoyed it, and gave it an 8.

I made the mistake of reading Linds' review before I'd finished! Ooops. :-)

Happy - each month, I collect at least one 1-star review and make them a part of the poll for that month's book. There was a corker on November's one HHhH: "This is the Spongebob Squarepants of historical novels" They went on to add "I don't know what that means, I just wanted to say it in a review."

Just finished it
Read in a day
Like Linds said it reminded me of the time travellers wife, also one of my favourite books

It opened my eyes to the actual daily life of living on an estate with slave labour and the shock of seeing it from the current* perspective (*and some things have not moved on from the seventies)
I also was interested in how Kevin had survived for those 5 years and would have liked more detail

Its a book I would never have come across without the book club so thank you Little Nemo

Its an 8/10 from me
