How would you time an internal session?

Tonight we were doing 12 x 400M intervals. 4 minutes between each new interval, so roughly 2 minute rest for me.

I hit lap each time we started a new 4 minute interval, but that's not helpful actually as it looks like I did every 400M in the same time.

Should I hit lap twice and ignore every second one where I don't move, or should I stop the watch when resting?

I've got a Garmin Forerunner 645, in case that makes a difference.

I would lap after each effort, and then lap at end of each recovery (ie start of next effort). That way you can see the times/pace for each rep.
If you just stop the watch at end of each rep, then you'll have no record of how long each rep took, just the total time for the 12 reps

Can you edit the thread title Ronnie? It might be a bit confusing.

I have done it slightly differently, used to just stop the watch every interval, it upsets people on St***a massively.

Alternatively I lap then stop means you get a split second on your next interval, but if you aren't training for Tokyo I am not sure it matters.

I also hit lap after each interval and each rest.

A personal thing - I don't like the set interval+recovery time. My personal opinion (others are available) is that your recovery should be specific to you/the group you're running with, and since I'm a fan of Daniels running formula, I use minimum half time recoveries - i.e. if your rep takes 2mins, your recovery is 1min. Of course there's nothing wrong with slightly longer recs - main important thing is consistency on the efforts.

That way, do me, the slower runners don't get shorter recoveries and everyone gets the same training benefit.

I know that swim coaches use the interval+recovery time method. Don't like it there either. Mainly because last time someone tried to do it with me, they set the time faster than I could swim the interval distance, so I had -ve recovery time. They then set it so I'd have had 5s recovery. At which point I said I wasn't doing it.

Thanks all, will try hitting lap at start and end of each rep/recovery next time.

Surely that would be external?

A mixture of both, if you're doing it right ;-)
