Think I might be getting in runs more often through working from home. Is a good way of breaking the day up and the sunshineโ€™s out!

Crosby beach and Burbo Bank offer acres of space for all but an invading army. ;) Maybe passed 50 people & assorted pooches during 40 minutes of running at a conservative [lower case 'c'] pace.

BJ's statement: We can leave home for one form of exercise per day (run/walk/cycle) performed alone or with members of our own household only.
That is encouraging news. We have a responsibility not to abuse this.

One form of exercise a day? So I can run 4 times a day?

Well I'm run-commuting tomorrow, so that's two,

I am not sure if my wording matches BJ exactly. The sense of BJ's message was one exercise sesion per day.
But you are allowed to travel to (and presumaly from) essential work, so it seems to me that run-commuting twice daily is OK

I just re-played the BJ statement:
The wording was:

'That is why people will only be allowed to leave their home for the following very limited purposes:
shopping for basic necessities, as infrequently as possible;
one form of exercise a day - for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household;
any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person; and
travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home.'

He did say one form of exercise but I suspect he meant one session; nonetheless, maybe we can run to and from the shop or to and from work ('when absolutely necessary')

Overall, the statement was not an example of perfect clarity. It seeems to me the greatest ambiguity is whether or not the work itself must be essential, or merely that if we are working that travelling to and from work must be essential.

This illustrates why it takes weeks of drafting to produce a Bill specifying a new law. I hope there is a written version available tommorrow, but meanwhile, I presume he intended that 'one form' means 'one session'.

So you guys can go for a run/walk/cycle in parks where there will be countless other people doing the same, but here in Spain I can't go for a run on deserted mountain trails where I would see no one on foot and only rarely a single vehicle within 5 miles.

You got lucky.... or maybe you didn't

I think the inference was clear, 1 exercise activity per person per day. But you can immediately see the attitude is how best to bend the rules. Do people not understand the consequences?

Not trying to bend any rules, I am without a car tomorrow and I need to get to work.

Obviously 4 times a day was a joke.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.โ€”(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the needโ€”

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
