Narrowboats are just over 2m (6ft 10in) wide - so as long as you're not right on the edge of the canal and they're not past 'mid point', it's probably reasonably OK. As long as you pass swiftly by, not stand and gawp, gaze, chat, picnic etc right next to them.
I've rarely seen a towpath that isn't 1-2m wide (or more) either - they were built for horses, and probably designed to allow for 2 horses to pass?

The action of Derbyshire police using drones to monitor the countryside appear misguided, but illustrate that unless we are all considerate in our use of the country side for exercise, we might face tighter restrictions

Canute - I saw something that they were using thermal imaging cameras to spot illegal drug use/cannabis farms, so maybe not after runners etc?

Sigh
Hmmm. Fine if it's used to disperse the crowds seen last weekend, my concern is that they pick on lone walkers/runners as a softer target. Bit like the camera traps never being where they're most needed.

In the video they say that walking (alone, or with oyur dog) miles from home is not necessary. They also indicate that driving to the peak District for exercise is not acceptable.

I would not have banned either of these things but we need to be aware of the how others might see 'unecessary' exercise

Tbh, I donโ€™t think driving to walk is acceptable, you should be walking from home,(if possible), or driving very locally.

I won't be driving miles to a beauty spot, but I am considering driving out of town to avoid busier areas.

Surrey County Council have closed all council owned countryside car parks.

From derbytelegraph site - 30 mins ago (or so)

Derbyshire police say they are still seeing "high volumes" of people outside throughout the county despite the UK being in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Derbyshire Roads Policing Unit tweeted that it could see too many people travelling to rural locations to do walks and cycle rides.

The unit urged people to stay at home and to exercise locally to their homes only.

It tweeted: "We are patrolling all areas of the county and continue to see an unusually high volume of activity particularly in rural areas. None of us ever expected or wanted this to happen but the message is clear - stay at home.

"Essential travel and local exercise does not include driving to locations and going for walks. It does not include lycra-clad leisure cycling on the now quieter roads. It isn't just about preventing the spread of the virus but also reducing the burden on essential services."

The police's warning came the morning after it was announced four people had died at Royal Derby Hospital from the virus.

About This Thread

Maintained by Canute
Covid-19 case numbers continue to rise exponentially in the UK.

It is even more crucial to do everything we can to slow the rate of onset of new cases. Nonetheless, exercise remains important for our health.

The relevant piece of the legislation in England is:

The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2020

Restrictions on movement

6.โ€”(1) During the emergency period, no person may leave the place where they are living without reasonable excuse.

(2) For the purposes of paragraph (1), a reasonable excuse includes the needโ€”

(a) to obtain basic necessities, including food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) or for vulnerable persons and supplies for the essential upkeep, maintenance and functioning of the household, or the household of a vulnerable person, or to obtain money, including from any business listed in Part 3 of Schedule 2;

(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

-----
That is an abbreviated version. Here is a link to a more comprehensive specification of section 6:
legislation.gov.uk

Similar regulations apply in Scotland, where section 8, (5) (b) states:
(b) to take exercise, either alone or with other members of their household.
In Northern Ireland, section 5 (2) (b) is the same:
(b) to take exercise either alone or with other members of their household;

In Wales, the regulations state that you can leave the house no more than once a day for exercise, The relevant section [section 8] states:

(b) to take exercise, no more than once a day, either alone or with other members of the household.

-----------

Here is a link to the guidance regarding a reasonable excuse to leave the house, issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (for England):

Note added 26th May: unfortunately the clear guidelines issued in April have been taken down and replaced by a more complex collection of documents.
-------------

The fact that the government accepts the importance of exercise places a responsibility on us to exercise in a way that reduces our risk of becoming a clinical case rather than increasing our risk.

Here is a review of the factors that influence the relationship between exercise and function of the immune system
