Awaiting consultant's letter with a date for THR on the right one. Haven't run for 15 months. Gave up yoga 18 months before that cause child pose hurt too much. Weight blossomed 3 stone, and suffering. I figure I should take as long to rehab as I took to get in this state.
Scared at the thought of being awake during the operation though.

My MiL was awake for hers and she said it was ok.
I had my hip resurfacing in 2003 and wasn't offered that option unfortunately. GA doesn't suit me. My blood pressure always drops very low. Had to have a day in bed to recover when I actually just wanted to get up and go for a walk on my new hip!
Hope it goes well for you.

Do you have to be awake? I wasn’t for mine (although that was 6 years ago so might have changed) I still can’t do child’s pose but I can run! It’ll be ok

Currently recovering from my pre-Christmas THR. Exciting milestones include doing up my own shoelaces today. I was expecting to be awake, but the anaesthetist went with his preferred combination of spinal anaesthetic and light GA. Got to the pool today - needed a 2 hour nap after 20 min in the pool. Oops.

Doing up your own shoelaces is a big thing when you haven’t been able to! My husband was very relieved when I could cut my own toenails again Now I come to think of it, that’s the combination I had too, spinal and sedative. I wasn’t awake but I didn’t have to have breathing aid either.

Ah. That's useful to know, jennywren. For the at some point in the future when I might need a thr to replace the resurfacing.
Agree about the independent toe nail cutting and shoe laces thing. 😁

It’s lasted you a long time Ness. I’m sure the THR (if you need one) will see you out They’re very durable these days

I get the impression that resurfacing isn't done for women these days because the failure rate is now considered too high (there tends to be an increased risk of fracture at the neck of femur post op). My consultant had only done about 200, I think he said, When I had the surgery in 2003 so they didn't have that much longevity data when he did mine.
I was lucky in that respect. I think, possibly because I was relatively young when I had it done. 35 at the time. So it may see me out. 😉 It is nice to know that there is an option if it doesn't.

I had a hip impingement (FAI) that I was persuaded could be fixed by surgery. It didn’t work and made my OA worse so I needed a THR 18 months later. Still haven’t quite got over my anger about that! Especially as the first op wasn’t available on the NHS in my area and so was paid for privately. Fortunately the hip was bad enough afterwards to qualify for NHS treatment so it had a good outcome eventually.
