Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

New year new me hellen. It was strangely liberating as whilst I knew that I could run 80mins, as I did it a year ago or so in training on a flat course, I didn't go out to do it, I just wanted to run 84 to PB.

as it turned out I did run faster but I put that down to being relaxed in my head, instead of thinking about pushing the pace for 10m, as I was slowing myself down to stop me going sub 8:00 pace I felt like I was in control and started to enjoy it. It is the first race I have run a negative split and it felt so much better as opposed to my PB at this distance which I did the first 5 in 40:00 and the last 5 in 44:30 - With walking and stop starting.

This one was 40:57 and 39:09

nice negative split lums

one thing I was wondering, I have had the prob once before and not sure if others have. I think there may be a prob with mr garmin. when I run from home the first 0.6miles is downhill. Consequently the fisrt mile is always faster pace/lower HR. Just looked at fridays recovery run and it was 9.45/mile HR 138. On sunday, even though I was jogging quite slowly and it felt easily my HR peaked at 172 (85%) which is cant possibly have been and for quite a bit of the first 5 mins it was in the 160s which it cant have been as I was going at around 10s. The first mile was 9.50/mile HR 158 which is way off what it normally is.

The same happened for one of my other LSRs so after the first mile when it seemed to have settled down I reset it. I have been doing this HRM lark for long enoguh now to beable to guess withing about 5-10beats what my HR is. I know there is no way it could have been in the 160s and certainly not 172!!! Not sure about the rest of the run. Whenever I looked it seemed to be a bit higher than I woudl have expected but not loads more.

Hellen, it could be something interfering with the HRM, Wifi, power lines, Aliens?

I have noticed my HR plummets in a couple of places on my regular route, I assumed it was power lines or such like. I will be running along t 10:00 pace and 141bpm, then suddenly its 132 for 10s and then back up to 141.

Mine often has erroneous readings in the first mile or so, until there is a decent (and sweaty) contact.

I imagine hellen poring over her Garmin readings like this! Doesn't all this analysis send you mad?

I know the answer but will ask anyway for the benefit of anyone else. Despite training hard for 15 months or so with intervals, tempos, 30k, 20m, Marathons etc, my HR has never gone above 182.

After sprinting for the line yesterday I saw 188 which has completely thrown me, so I assume I should take this reading now - it does correlate with maximum effort and I was nearly sick after crossing the line.

It just shows you though that unless you have done a proper test you cannot be sure.

It does also mean that a lot of my 70% runs were in fact 66%

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
