Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Its probably early days IR, persevere a little longer, i've read that you should see some improvement after 6 weeks but that really depends that you are doing it right (i am sure you are) and how much you are running each week

IR- notthing to worry about, it does take time, think it took me at least a couple of months to start to see any major improvement, but when it happened, it was quite dramatic.

girlie, I wasnt suggesting you train quicker jsut that you MIGHT have made jst as much progress doing runs at 73% , however, you have made really good progress as it is so if I was in your position I would have no regrets. I do have regrets though cos if anything I have got worse.

went to the gym this afternoon and had a really good session. Whilst I have been marathon training (pretty much all year) I have still been to the gym but just pottered. today I did a bit more than potter, did intervals on Xtrainer like I used to and worked up a sweat like I used to pre parker.

am wondering if my reason for lack of progerss/getting worse could be that preparker I ran 3 times a week reasonably hard, went to the gym several times a week where I worked reasonably hard and swam where I did at least 1 interval session a week doing 15 mins alternating butterfly with crawl. With parker cos I was increasing my milage I cut the frequency of my XT and also the intensity so all my XT was easy and very low Hr and most my running was easy. I had been used to getting out my comfort zone about 4 or 5 times a week on varies activities pre parker but now after parker I get out my comfort zone once a week at most.

I think that XT can help with running, a couple of year back I couldnt run for 3 months but continued with the gym doing 2 hour sessions at least once a week to replace my LR. Also did a lot of aquajogging intervals. When I got back to running I built up to a HM over the course of about 10 weeks and reduced my time from 3.03 to 1.57. I put it down to the hard XT I did when injured.

Thanks. I am running about 35 to 40 miles per week. One hard run, one long run and the rest easy. Running 5 to 6 times per week.

Ian, just give it a little time. You are doing fine, as Girlie says it can take a while to kick in but when it does it's great. Then you have a decent base built. :-)

Hi everyone! As you know I don't post very often but I try to keep up with this thread and have gained loads from all the sensible and freindly advice on here.

Just to add my little voice to the rest...your opinions are appreciated IanM - please don't leave us! Not wishing to single people out (but that's exactly what I'm going to do!) between you, eL-Bee! and Hendo, you've got it all covered, I reckon....thanks!! :-)

Oh my! What's been happening? , Ian, you are lovely and your advice is always greatly appreciated, as are el-bee's ,BB's, hendos and girlies, and anyone else who offers an opinion on things. After all, I post on here to get advice. You should feel free to say anything you think is right, I certainly don't ever feel 'told' to do anything but feel i can pick and choose what advice I take.

Features - I agree - it's hard to remember how many people have given me good advice, so THANKS EVERYONE :-)

Hellen - sorry to hear you are so frustrated. Why don't you change your training, maybe cut the miles & add more speedwork, but still mix easy/hard days up. Given your great base from your marathon training I wouldn't be surprised if you could get some PBs fairly soon. Have you got another marathon planned?

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
