Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

HappyG - good info, seems like a complete lottery as to whether it might work well for any arbitrary person or not.

I’m another one who has reverted to chest strap. I’ve used a couple of types of ohr and as long as I am happy with rough approximation then it’s fine but if I want accuracy I go for chest strap.

I think that it is a matter of preference. On long runs, I find the chest strap uncomfortable. The difference in readings between OHRM and Chest strap is never more than 5bpm, which is insignificant. So, for me, they are giving me the same information and I will go for the more comfortable option when needed.
However, some people have reported huge variations between the two (>20 bpm) which obviously is significant.

So HRV and Garmin products, as I was looking for some HRV monitoring...

I spotted this on the Garmin site:

"HRV is not available for analysis by the end consumer using Garmin Products. With the addition of devices supporting the Connect IQ feature this information may be available from a third party application. Visit the Connect IQ Store to see if your device supports the Connect IQ feature."

support.garmin.com

although then I spotted this (for the Fenix 5 and Forerunner 935) - ie the £400+ ones:

firstbeat.com

As a Vivoactive user, does anyone know of any 3rd party apps to monitor HRV. Apparently there used to be for Vivoactive 3, that crashed some where at the beginning of this year...

forums.garmin.com

Any others people know of? (widgets etc)

Let us know how it goes Glenn, I've seen some people say it's "a random number generator" but then another blog showing how it showed during his wife influenza attack that it really showed the impact of the illness.

I think in answer to my last question, it's only available with the Garmins that have optical heart rate monitoring. I have been coveting the Vivoactive 3 for a while, and it's nearly my birthday.

The Vivoactive 3 has a "stress measure" app/widget built in. I have no idea what it would be telling me. Is that using HRV?

Anyhoo, more fundamentally if my VA3 isn't recording my HR properly (as Andrew says + or - 20 or more BPM - usually +! ) then HRV is moot! :-) G

Having a bluetooth / Ant+ HRM combined means I can use things like Elite HRV with my existing strap if I fancy it.

Optical I can see being beneficial as either sleeping in the chest strap HRM or waking up and putting it on is a bit of a faff. Providing you get good data from it.

I've only tried logging HRV a couple of times (which defeats the object), got 66/68 readings from Elite. Didn't know whether that was objectively "good" or "bad", though immediately assumed high was "bad". Maybe I'll try to do some more monitoring.

I may be wrong, but I thought only straps could measure HRV.

Chrisull - off topic but Vivoactive 3 Garmin Pay only works if you have a Santander debit / credit card. No other UK bank at the mo (annoyingly, cos I wanted to buy my juice / water / recovery drink) with my watch! :-) G

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
