Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

(and I guess that ANT+ connectivity will be a factor I consider when looking for my next phone)

DMZ, yes, Samsungs seem to be OK with ANT+. I'm due a phone upgrade on my contract in a couple of months time, and I may end up going for a Samsung Galaxy S7 (unless the S8 is available at a more affordable price by then). I went for the LG G4 because of the camera, which is superb, but the S7's camera is reputedly even better, so I'm happy to switch back.

I'd like to make HRV testing a regular thing again, because I think it's a very interesting metric and I'm sure can be used to make worthwhile adjustments to one's training. In my case I'm most interested in what it tells me to help me avoid overtraining and the susceptibility to low-level viral infections that come up with it. That was what got me into it a couple of years ago.

I agree it seems an interesting metric. I recall a few days last year when I had raised resting HR and unusually low early-morning HRV, and sure enough running felt awful and I soon had to take a few days off before everything went back to normal. If I saw that pattern again (high resting HR/low HRV) then I would probably put the brakes on sooner and pay more attention than I did last time. There may be other patterns to watch for - I'm wondering if/how HRV evolves for me over a training season building to a big race. And then over several years/seasons.

Oh, and I heard good things about the S7.

ANT+ is better for sensor connections IMO compared to BLE. With ANT+ you can connect to multiple sensors at once, where's BLE is point to point.

Larkim - I had testing done at Reaseheath College. £80. I would recommend - but do ensure you are well rested like they advise.

Didn't realise Reaseheath (agricultural college!) would do that - other than for horses etc! Thanks, will take a look.

Hi not sure this is the right place to ask but do any of you know how you can look at your hr data at the point around a pause on a run. I'm using a forerunner 235, Garmin Connect and fetch to look at my data.

I don't know, EB, and I wish I did. Used to be easy with my FR610.

I had a bit of an 'episode' yesterday out running paused my Garmin after hitting the deck feeling very confused about what happened. Garmin is suggesting a sudden drop in heartrate but I'm thinking it must be where I restarted and ran again. However my cadence seems to disagree with that. Tried the app and the Web version to look at data more thoroughly but can't see how to do it. Thanks anyway ☺️

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
