Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

DMZ, what's your phone, if you don't mind my asking? My previous one was a Samsung Galaxy S4, which worked fine with ANT+. My current one, an LG G4, doesn't. I note that LG isn't in the list here - https://www.thisisant.com/consumer/ant-101/ant-in-phones/. I didn't check before getting my new phone, assuming what went for one Android device went for all. This might be a factor in my decision as to what phone to go for at my next upgrade.

That list is far from comprehensive. Many HTC phones have had Ant+ compatibility and yet there are only two listed.

I'm sure you're right. But I can't get my LG one working at all (and I'm reasonable technically minded).

Have you tried the ANT Tester app? That will tell you if the phone is Ant capable.

Yes, I did. It gives the verdict that the phone is 'ANT Capable', but has 'Built-in ANT detected: No', 'Built-in firmware: No' and 'ANT HAL service: Not found'. It seems that the harware is there but LG have disabled it, for some reason (presumably not to persuade me to switch back to Samsung, which may be the effect).

If it says " built-in Ant detected No" why do you think it is present but disabled? I'd interpret it as saying it doesn't have the hardware.

Well, because it says the phone is 'ANT Capable', which I assume means something. I think I read about the ANT being disabled somewhere as well. In any case, I'm not going to able to get ANT+ working in it, I'm sure.

Indeed Larkim.
My Nexus 6p shows Ant capable, but built in as no.
Which is correct, as it does not have the hardware, but because it is on the latest version of android, it is software capable. In fact some people use the USB on the go feature to add ant+ functionality (I haven't personally)

Now I'm wondering again ......
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 8 tablet. If I hook my ANT stick up via a USB port to it, is there some software around that would allow me to sync to my Garmin 405, does anuone know?

I tried about 18 months back - but it would ever play as far as I can tell. Am I missing something?

I could almost lose my laptop if it would do that!
(And sorry, this is about 95% off topic now!)

That makes sense, if it's just going by an Android feature. Slightly misleading, though, I would say.

I have to say that I'm a little puzzled as to why ANT+ capability has seemingly fallen out of favour on Android phones, because it's what Garmin uses, and they must have a pretty big share of the HRM market. In these days, when one is expected to instantly share details of every bodily function with the world via one's smartphone, I would have thought ANT+ capability would be the norm.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
