I have one of the old straps with a snap on pod which is still going strong after about three years.

I brought my one in 2014 so I fear it's starting to go it has problems picking up at start so my HR is about 90% in first 5 mins of a run then generally ok. But in last miles or so last night it was going all over the place

Earlier this week the new version of the HRM-run was at a good discount on Amazon.

Incidentally, I trashed my older version - the one with the clip on unit - by leaving it in hold luggage on a plane.

I have to soak mine before a run, otherwise I get spurious readings. If I soak it first, it is spot on

The new style HRMs are really nice, I've got the HRM-Tri. It slips less and it adjusts more easily. Only issue is the pod doesn't come off so when the straps dead you have to chuck the whole thing. I'm hope it lasts for a long time!

All my Garmin HRMs (at least 5, probably more) prior to the 630 seemed indestructible, the 630 HRM failed at the eyelet end after 2 months use just before a race, I really wanted to race with it on to know whether my apparent recent improvement was an illusion so I effected a quick fix with superglue. I contacted Garmin who until then I have to say had been excellent in my experience and the response was that I had invaidated my guarantee and would have to buy a new strap - as £50 for 2 months use didn't seem like a bargain I asked whether there was a known manufacturing fault, which they denied.
Now I'm not one of these people with misplaced feelings of entitlement so I'm not flouncing from Garmin etc etc but they have not done themselves any favours here. I said pretty much the above in the Garmin 630 forum area.

The 3 Garmin straps I've had (610, 220, 620), have been universally hopeless, lasting no more than a few months. The Polar Wearlink? one I use at the moment still works and must be nearly 3 years old. £15 on Amazon last time I looked.

My 620 strap is still going after one battery change. Having said that, I only wear it on weekend long runs...which may explain why it hasn't bitten the dust...yet.

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
