I remember a bloke called JHuff who was a fan of that type of thing (adding arbitrary numbers on the top...)
The reason there are different suggested ways to find out a max is that we're not all the same type of athlete. For example - I don't do nearly enough fast running in training to get my legs turning over quick enough these days in a 5km to work my heart hard enough. Equally, the (related) lack of explosivity/power means I can't use short/hard hills either now. The best way I found, consistently, over the last few years *for me* was to run steadily up a long long hill. Off road, on road, whatever. But it needs to be long. Maybe a 10 minute effort or so. And then just gradually increase the effort gradually from steady upwards.

I managed to hit my highest heartrate ever at parkrun last week. I have started interval training on a Wednesday (which might have been a contributing factor) and I managed an average of 92.5% MHR with me topping out at 175bpm racing to the finish for 200m slightly uphill (at Cross Flatts). The parkrun is 2.5 laps with a 20m drop from top to bottom so conducive to a high heartrate!

Hopefully I will run a parkrun at the end of the month and be able to compare results.
What do people think is an acceptable margin of error? 1% is less than 2 beats for me.

I can recommend the Letting Yourself Go To Shit mode of finding you max HR. Simply stop running for about a year, put on a couple of stone, and then do 5 x 800m intervals as hard as you can. You'll find it quite easy to get your heart near to exploding out of your chest.*
*Not actually scientific method.

Just over 11 miles at 73% MaxHR (was aiming for 75% MaxHR but erred on the side of caution). And after a dodgy bored feeling between mile 3 & 4 really enjoyed it.

Those Wednesday runs, easily the most difficult of the week for me. Extended running on tired legs from a workout the day before.
Quite pleased to get to Thursday this week and still be on course. Tuesday after lots of life things getting in the road I very nearly gave in to not running at all, but then found myself down the track in the dark for a steady sub LT run. Came in at 6:39/mile for 80% MHR which was pleasing but ultimately incorrect as I didn't do 40 laps. I also didn't run in lane 1 as it was a blaze track and was all churned up and overgrown in lane 1 so I won't be as far off 10 miles as I think.
Yesterday my legs were so heavy a morning run would have been nasty, and lots of life things again, but I managed to squeeze in 13 miles in the afternoon. I find I'm having to push on to get 75% on runs at times. Legs don't really want to do it, HR is saying "this is nothing, get a move on".
It'll be a joy/relief to do some sub 70% today, but at the same time I'm looking forward to some more sub LT on Friday morning. Going off road for that again.
31 miles so far this week (about 38 by the time I get today's run in).

A slow just under 11.5 miles at 68% MaxHR. However the wrist based HRM went a bit screwy (maybe due to the cold) so it was probably better than that.
