Hope you're settling in well down-under Bob.
Crash, I recommend giving a track race a go. It is very short and intense but everyone respects pepole for having a go (I have been last in both of mine). I did run 75s for the 400m which is comparatively slow but when else am I going to do any 5:00/mile running?
Any news yet Nellers?
Last Friday 5k today for me: the sun came out about half hour before the start and the temperature soared. Managed 21ish (waiting for official result and forgot to stop Garmin) so no PB but close. Happy with that though today as the hip was still very sore during warm-up. Actually didn't hurt during the race at all, nor did it in the Mile race last Sunday, so I think it's to do with my landing and I'm less time on the ground when running at speed.
Afterwards, Curly and I went to a nice Italian restaurant near Victoria for lunch to hydrate on pizza and beer. They forgot to bill us for the food, just the drinks. We did tell them but the waiter just shrugged it off so we had a three-course lunch and drinks for about £20. Result

Try fell running Rob. Three minute miles said to be possible on some down hill stretches.
The many benefits of pizza (hydrational and otherwise) are underestimated by nutritionists. I once got a 5k pb just by thinking about it. “Feet in the Clouds” ( a lot of stuff on the history of fell running, but also good on mental toughness), reveals that Helene Diamantides sustained herself with pizza when setting a new women's record for the Bob Graham Round.

Getting back into running after a layoff *is* really hard word, RD; I have absolutely hated it when it's happened to me!
Rob, it sounds like 'fun'...I've been to the velodrome and done flying laps; about 20sec of really hard effort, which doesn't sound that difficult, but almost everyone had tunnel vision and was on the verge of throwing up; does this sound about right? Sounds like you're right about the hip, too.
Molers, BGR runners are utterly bonkers

Indeed Crash. I like the fells, but although I'm reasonably familiar with most of the course, can't see myself ever being in good enough shape to get round in 24 hours.

Was going to say earlier but didn't post But Dean Karnazes was known to order pizza on the run and eat it mid run or something from memory (from reading his book)

What you're describing Crash is a 'lactate face'! I got that in my 400m and by 300m I could barely see where my lane was. I ran for just over a minute and spent about ten minutes getting my breath back and, despite how that sounds, I did really enjoy it
There aren't any fells to run on round here Mole, but I'm sure I would be about to break limbs if I was traveling at 3min/mile!

Thanks NO. Need a new book and always good to get some more pizza related advice
Rob it is said (written) that when decending, faster is safer. They have fell races on the Isle of Wight if you want to give it a try.

i can't ever imagine having the confidence to just fling myself down the hill like fell runners do. my oh is quite good at it but i'm inhibited by the fear that i won't be able to stop if i need to.
