Hi There,

First of all I am sure that there have been a number of forum posts in regards to this issue but as I have a specific need for it due to an upcoming marathon (Berlin in September) I though I would start the conversation again.

Right then so as I mentioned above I am running the Berlin Marathon in September, this will be my first marathon so want to be able to be in the best place I can be by the time I get there.

I currently run in Adidas Response Boost (on my 2nd pair) but think that it is worth having my gait and running style analysed to ensure that I have the best pair of trainers to both train and run the marathon in.

I am due to take a trip into London at the end of June and was wondering a couple of things.

Firstly are there any recommended shops that provide the service but aren't geared towards promoting just one shoe manufacturer???? It can be a well known chain or an easily accessible smaller shop I don't mind doing the trekking around London I just want to find the best place to have the analysis done!

Secondly, what is everyones views on gait analysis in general? Is it a benefit or do you find that you've found the best type of trainer by trial and error?

As always all of your views and recommendations / points are completely welcome and no matter what your view please, please feel free to leave a comment. One of the biggest benefit of being a Fetchie is the brilliant and diverse opinions that can give someone like me the best starting point to make an informed decision on how to progress this next step in my maiden Marathon Journey!

Thanks in advance everyone

I had a gait analysis done locally by a podiatrist who checked my whole body movement and advised accordingly. After assessment I also had to have a body adjustment from my chiropractor. It wasn't cheap, but it was definitely worth it and enabled me to increase my mileage and time on feet.

Alex, go to the Drummond Clinic in Maidenhead, physios specialising in gait analysis, they all are runners themselves- best place locally by miles, no need for it to be London.

Why do you think you need gait analysis, Alex? Injuries, poor form, uncomfortable shoes?

A lot of the old thinking around gait analysis (i.e. identify level of pronation and therefore type of shoe required) has been questioned more recently. There's a good item on the Kinetic Revolution site going into it in some detail...
kinetic-revolution.com

Loads of good resources on that site about improving running form (without resorting to "special" shoes), strength and balance exercises for runners, etc.

Loads of running shops have treadmills - if nothing else an opportunity to make a buying decision based on a brief analysis of comfort (which, that article above argues, should be the primary factor in shoe selection).

Well for a bog-standard analysis for the purposes of checking your shoes out (ie not physio based looking for a solution to an issue), I'd go to Run & Become in Victoria.

Is "gait analysis" a more in-depth and substantial process than going to your local running shop and jumping on the treadmill, trying out a few pairs of shoes and choosing the one that seems to produce most straight lines on the monitor? (I have done the latter several times, but never knowingly gone for "gait analysis!)
