I did read an article that taking the first penalty was a 60/40 advantage but that has closed over the years. Only thing with that blog is it is a limited sample size. Only 22 shootouts, but I thought it was interesting to take a look. Again only off a small number, but early penalty shootouts hardly any misses. More recently that has changed. I think that will be down to more footage and knowledge of the kickers preferences etc. |

In the (excellent) play Dear England there's quite a bit about how Southgate used a psychologist to support how England players approached the idea of penalties. The play says that, before Southgate, in a penalty shoot out, the time between the ref blowing a whistle and the player kicking the ball was something like 8 seconds for German players and 2 seconds for England players. Now you see England players taking a big breath, or otherwise composing themselves before the run up, and our shoot out results improved dramatically. Southgate also promoted the idea of the England keeper giving the ball to the England player on his walk up. That way, the player doesn't feel alone in that long walk from the centre circle. Southgate may not have actually invented any of these ideas, but they're just some of the ways he improved the England squad, and whatever happens in these Euros I hope we (fans) don't forget that. |

Yes, indeed. It was for many years an English thing not to really practise pens ‘you can’t replicate the pressure’ was Bobby Robson’s explanation or explore the psychological aspect.

theguardian.com Penalty shootout won/loss record and conversion rate of pens overall of the Euro last 16. No surprise to see the awful won/loss record of England and Netherlands. |

Didn't Bobby Robson have something against practising penalties as he wanted his England team to focus on winning in 90 or 120 minutes.

Well, if a miracle happens and we get past Slovakia, Switzerland would need to have Xhaka and Akanji injured plus Engalnd to play ten times better than so far to beat them. Switzerland were so good they made Italy look barely average.

Fenners, Italy are bang average. England beat them home and away in qualifying; that poor form has continued into this tournament.

Italy aren’t the same without Bonucci, Immobile, Chellini and Verati that’s the spine apart from Donny
