I think it had to be continuous without stopping. Bruno Fernandez has an unusual one but he is moving forwards. I think IFAB needs to do something to stop an unnatural run up which is solely designed to force the goalkeeper to move.

However, if I was a goalkeeper and saw someone dance, moonwalk or move slowly towards the ball, I would tend to wait for the ball to be kicked as there is likely to be less pace on it as if a proper run up occurred.

That's a good point about Bruno, his action is clearly pronounced to both stutter yet still be continuous forward motion.

"Their European Championship win came eight years after the Prague Spring - when a Soviet-led herd of tanks had rolled across the border and crushed attempts to loosen the country's communist system." The seemingly tiny things that added up to a huge difference. Those years between 1968 and 1989 - Plastic People of the Universe, Marta Kubisova's "Prayer for Marta", Charter -77, AND *Panenka's penalty* - all lead into the Velvet Revolution where communism was kicked out from Czechoslovakia, without a single life being lost. Right back to the football where were we?
I remember visiting Prague at the end of the 1980s and some students showing me where half a million people had come out on to the streets in celebration of Czechoslovakia beating the Soviet Union in Ice Hockey. The Soviet embassy etc. was under armed guard, so a large crowd had set fire to the Aeroflot offices instead.

Phil you sound like Peter Shilton, waiting for it to be kicked is too late.

Lineker and Shilton came up with that plan watching other shootouts. Usually there’s at least one penalty that’s straight down the middle or poorly struck.

Watching the ball and waiting to see how the foot contacts the ball helped me save a few penalties over the years as an emergency keeper, (though obviously at a level that was so much lower it’s hardly comparable).

I didn’t ever play at any real level but I only ever missed one penalty and that hit the post.

My tactic was always to go for a corner, usually my right, hitting low and hard.

If struck well and accurately it would take a good keeper to save it.

I was behind the goal watching Andy Gray take one against Peter Shilton. Gray tended to just hit them hard and hope for the best - usually down the middle. It went straight, Shilton didn't move and it still flew in. He tried it against Steve Ogrizovic, who also didn't move but caught it.

I didn't take that many penalties but always went for the corner. I scored in a shootout like Paul Breitner in the 1974 WC Final. A simple side-foot into the bottom left corner. You are told to make up your mind so wasn't too impressed when a team-mate told me where to place it as I went forward. Thankfully, I already decided on that spot.

Fascinating on stats, nicely exploded myth in there that taking the first penalty is an advantage. But missing it definitely not good news :)

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
