It's mainly the press I've been seeing, BBC - Alan Shearer, you name it. Radio alarm wakes up in the morning it's the same thing. England now close to evens fave in bookies to win it. Best chance to win it everyone is saying. And there is a bit of it mildly on here. And if it's tripping my wires, you can bet it's tripping other people's too....

And the Ukraine comment was obviously a bit of a barb... "should ease past" then a reminder of the last team we should have "eased past" ... Iceland.

I've watched England since 1978 (or rather Scotland then and the Tartan army as we hadn't qualified) and I haven't seen anything particularly different over the last 40 years, it's always the same - shall we keep Robson, Wilkins, Lineker, Rooney on the pitch - when they obviously haven't been performing. The obviously overly-defensive formations (which this time actually may be successful, the teams with the best defences often win tournaments, and I haven't see a better one than Englands. )

I think Kane's a good player - have no axes to grind with him, but it was down to Sterling's running and movement the first goal. Up until then, he looked woeful. A poor touch and miss at the end of the first half. I've seen it with Birmingham strikers too, 10 years a season ticket holder of keeping on someone who isn't performing and when he does bury a header from 5 yards, it's like "oh bloody great he's guaranteed for the next 5 games on the start sheet now".

There's a chance for exciting football with a fistful of wonderful talents. The Germans can't believe we haven't started Sancho. Dunno as I get older, I'd rather see exciting football and risktaking, than grinding the opposition to dust and nicking it. I hated Greece when they won Euro 2004. There's a reason that everyone remembers the 5-1 here, that's because for a moment we opened up and played expansive football. It can happen again.

We should have played Germany, Spain, Holland, France.

We have beaten Germany, then have Ukraine, Denmark/Czech Republic, Italy/Belgium.

That is easier. That’s pretty much a statement of fact. It’s not easy, no games are a given but in bookies worldwide England will be favourites in their quarter and semi final matches.

It is ok to be excited by this, optimistic, joyful. Thats why we watch it.

What I don’t understand is the desire to go we are rubbish we always lose to Germany. Oh we beat them, we will only lose to Ukraine because we are bloody England. That mindset is so depressing. Why bother watching it. Why feign interest in it.

It probably is our best chance to win it - whether we will is another matter. Even if we get past Ukraine (which won't be easy) then we've got the small matter of an on-fire Denmark, or the Czechs. That's even before we would meet one of the big hitters in the final. But, that is a pretty favourable route to the final. I'd rather be in England's shoes than Belgium's.

Cheg - Well the obvious point is we haven't won anything since 1966, and being properly self-critical about it is one way to change it.

For different reasons Ukraine and Denmark are both playing with extreme and understandable emotion at the moment. They can both beat England if they channel that properly. But Brazil in the WC semi v Germany showed what it's like when that pressure gets too much, when they treated having neymar injured like he was dead.

Being self critical is one way to change it? Are you Gareth Southgate? Do you have a direct line to him? Do England have scouts scouring fetch for titbits? If the answer to those questions is no then it’s just fans being pessimistic and moaning, bathing in the misery of it all.

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
