I do think a lot/some of the 'youth' today are big into the gym rather than running/swimming.

I have a 20yo and him and his GF are in the gym 4-5 times every week without fail.

Certainly seems a shift in the drinking culture as well for that age group (my lad has just got back from 2 week All Inclusive in Mexico and didnt drink once!!)

Maybe my view is clouded by my lad and his friends, but talking to others I hear the same.

You learn from what's round you, whether it's parents, friends, schoolmates or whatever. If you don't see people doing sport (whether it's running, swimming, weight training or whatever) then it's not going to seem like a thing you would do yourself. It then does come down to a bit of personality too. My 3 have seen me running, cycling, swimming, weight training etc since they were little. One is a very regular gym-goer who runs a bit, one has a career in sports rehab and runs/gyms sporadically around her work. The oldest plays football and has never really enjoyed any other sort of exercise so doesn't do it. They've all been, and continue to be physically active because that's kind of normal for them from growing up with me about I think.

They can all swim, though, but we were in a position to be able to finance and accommodate swimming lessons for them because the local school didn't. They've got friends who can save themselves if they fell in but never swam more than that at all because their parents either didn't prioritise it or couldn't due to their circumstances, and there were definitely both of those amongst their various friend groups.

I don't think there are many of their friend group who didn't learn to swim because they'd rather play on their Xbox.

My other lad who has just turned 16 loved junior parkrun when he could do it (up to age 14) Done it right up to a few days before his 15th birthday. He got down to running sub 7 for 2k off doing that parkrun each week (6:53 was his final PB) He done that along with football.

I cannot get him to do 5k parkrun although he still plays football each week.

Its a shame as he loved the buzz of parkrun and 'racing' to beat his times but 5k just seems a big jump for him!! Maybe one day he will get back to it (he wont go out for a casual run either!!)

Fetchead swims very nicely too. (Also can't think why) but does very little at the moment. Again more interested in gym than run swim or bike.

[They don't swim because you cant be on your social media when swimming; but you can whilst walking at 1 mph on a treadmill or sitting for two minutes between sets on a weights machine (that I'm waiting to use).]
