I once did a veg/carb free crash diet that allowed fat and protein but required drinking a *lot* of water to avoid kidney damage. It was ghastly and I lasted a week I asked because I've noticed certain reactions to lack of particular foods. For instance, shaking, or getting a very red face (my face responds strongly to any hormonal change) if my protein intake falls. When other people crave carbs I crave protein and vegetables. I find it fascinating how we are all so different.

My only previous encounter with low carb was as a teenager when I tried the Stillman diet. No fruit was allowed, the only veg permitted were things I didn't like, and after a week of eating just corned beef and cheese, I jacked it in.
I'm not aware of reacting to a lack of certain foods.... but at the end of November I had a dessert, after six weeks of no sugar at all. It produced the most intense and urgent need to go to the loo. Kind of scared me off 'treating' myself since.
Of course, it could have been something else in the meal... or unrelated to what I'd eaten. How will I know...Except by trying it? OTOH, I doubt you'll find a dietitian anywhere who will identify a virtually nil sugar intake in an obese diabetic as a problem which needs to be fixed by eating more sugar....

Cuddy
I feel a bit errr, ill. Queasy. Barfy. Contemplating whether to eat an apple or just throw up. Or just lie down and pray. On top of that, being on POP and not having a period for years, apparently the low carb was enough to shock my body to prompt one, since like Sunday.
*heads to lie down*

Hope you feel better soon Cuddy - every other post on fb seems to be someone telling me they've got a stomach bug - some in far too much detail! Hope it's a 24 hour thing and you're up and about soon ((()))
A quick pop in to class tonight (couldn't stop as had Parents' Evening for no 2 son) and the meal planning has paid off with a 2lb loss - didn't quite cover last week's gain but I'm happy that it's going back in the right direction. So for the coming week, more planning as that obviously works, plus I now need to focus a bit more on the "measured" elements of the plan.

Well done Cuddy. Glad to read more positivity in the ranks - feeling ill and stressed really doesn't help does it?
My cat among pigeons post on 21st November referred to two confessions. This is the second.
I've joined the local Slimming World group because there are already a couple of people that I know there, and I wanted to see whether real-life accountability will make a difference (I've never been a 'gang' person and there's stuff about some groups that I;m quite wary of). As long as I ignore the marketing for packaged foods the plan is basically what I eat anyway, with less fat and sugar. Eating less fat and sugar probably won't harm me.
According to their weighing conditions I lost 5 pounds in week one and none last week. I suspect it's the variation in clothing as I haven't joined the 'strip down to your minimums' group yet and it was rather cold last week. The record on the spreadsheet here is accurate for the same situation each day.
So far I've managed to overcome the urge to walk out when my buttons are pushed (calling food by silly names), and am looking at the bigger picture - hoping to make it a smaller picture The consultant makes sensible suggestions and is encouraging to those who are having tough times, so I'm going to give it six weeks to see how I get on over Christmas and the New Year before deciding if being in this kind of group is really going to help.

Just popping in... SW worked for me and I have been a target member now for a year and a half. 2 friends joined 5 weeks ago and both have now lost over a stone so keep going.

Thanks MerryLG. SW seems to have a lot of fans, and I'm guessing any mainstream group is likely to have a relatively sensible eating plan.
One of the hard-won insights that I gained is that smaller weight losses are the ones I hold onto.
One of the memes that I have already noticed 'at group' is that higher losses are applauded, e.g. Slimmer of the week (the person who has lost the most weight that week), and the encouragement of a member who wanted to aim for an eight pound loss next week, "any of you could do that if you only ate 'speed' foods."
It may be me being over-sensitive, but I would have felt more comfortable if the ambiion had been framed as 'for this particular person, possible, but not typical' and actually a weight loss of 'n' lbs is more sustainable etc. Anyway, that won't stop me going, and I keep reminding myself to take what is useful and meets my needs and ignore the stuff that I disgaree with.
It's only been two weeks, but so far there hasn't been any discussion about the role of exercise.

My class leader tends to go for the "1 or 2 pounds, that's all we ask" approach. Occasionally someone shoots for a 3 or 4 pounder to hit a particular target. Never come across someone aiming as high as an 8 though

It will be interesting to see how you get on, Hel. I found the group accountability didn't work for me after I was the only person to lose weight over Christmas and the New Year, but there was no Slimmer of the Week that week because "everyone puts on weight over Christmas". It's silly things like that which put me off and they shouldn't bother me because I should be losing weight for me, not to get the applause of others.
