Allegedly you can poison the trees by hammering in copper nails too, Garfield. But you still have to chop something down eventually!
Don't the land registry and property deeds say anything useful?

I've not had a look at them. And the hedge has in place for years from the looks of it, so probably not an issue.

Also, the original house may have been oriented a different way, which would make sense of the shape of the double property. Two bungalows were built on the original spot.
There are a few houses in our area that are curiously placed...one of them with a front door that is in a very weird location...if there weren't a fence on a local footpath, it may have been the original path to the house.

I love unpicking "how it was" type things.
I'm always fascinated by the old cricket pavilion & club-house (which is now a residential house) orphaned from the cricket field by a newer road bridge over the East Coast main line into York. If you stand in the right place you can see that the road was adjusted to match the bridge and that there used to be a straight line view to the church at the far end of the lane!

Yes, the Surrey History Centre is close by us and when we were going to a talk there, we were early, so had a nice chat with someone there and we had a peek at some maps of our area.
