Stinging nettles are evil little beggars when you're out on an expedition and come upon them unprepared. I remember reading somewhere they're a neurotoxin.... Although they're very nutritious, supposedly good in various herbal remedies*, and the butterflies and moths need them, so we're encouraged to plan more and not uproot them.
*Once cooked, crushed, mashed, dried, etc.. Don't use "raw" ones!
He was just a middle of the road guy, until he drank a radioactive coffee from a mysterious roadside caravan. For years now, he has tried to track it down...
I was interested to hear Autumnleaves build up to the Tour of Merseyside. Multiday events are tricky from a recovery point of view. They are also really hard to judge when racing because you are always conscious that you need to hold back a little. I did the Tour of Tameside a few times and was always sort of waiting for everything to fall apart.
The worst year I had was when I picked up a blister on my heel on the first or second day and it just got worse as the week went on. It was in a real mess after the fell race so I went to see the St. John's First-Aiders at the finish. It was very unfair to inflict such a thing on the poor cadets. I hobbled over, took my trainer off, peeled my sock off and showed the heel to the unfortunate youngster.
"Bloody hell!" she gasped, at which point a more senior St. John's lady came over.
"Oh no," she admonished the trauma struck teen, "We never say things like that."
I assured her that it was okay and apologised for the state of my foot. She very carefully dressed it with some padding and gave me some extra stuff that got me through the rest of the week.
I hope your tour goes well, AL. I look forward to hearing some updates from the actual event.
Eek HowFar! I don't usually get blisters 🤞 my main issue last time was fuelling, by the Friday I was struggling to eat enough during the day. Things fell apart a bit on the final day, when I also only had about 12 hours recovery.
