Elsie Too
My first thought is “up to 2 years” that is one big commitment.
At the start you won’t want to commit to anything because you have no clue how you are going to cope being a mum and you don’t want a stranger coming in and looking at you and judging you.
That would have been my reaction 10 years ago.

I actually said yes to this a year ago but the candidate found another family nearer her home. I was approached by a work colleague (related field) who knew them, which swung it for me. Might be another avenue.

It is big isn’t it Elsie. I feel the same way too 🙁 It’s a course requirement to do two years and there’s no way to make it shorter.

I’d really hope to get across that it’s not about judgement. I’m trying to watch how a baby grows and interacts. Do you think there is anything I could say to reassure people about that? What would you want to hear do you think?

Thanks LF, as in I might get in better through word of mouth friend of a friend sort of thing? Perhaps I ought to be asking for friends to tell me about their pregnant friends in that case 🤔

That's exactly how I was nobbled. A colleague asked me if I would consider. The colleague and I were both working with families/young people at the time so it wasn't as random as it sounds.

Nobbled 😁 so you maybe weren’t all that keen really. Do you know what parts of it sounded interesting? Was it because, working with families, you could perhaps see a benefit/purpose to it? I wonder if I could play up the “helping people provide better services for young people” angle?

The barrier for me would have been that I was going back to working long hours within a few months of the baby's birth and wouldn't be able to provide a stable observation window.

Over 20 years ago, I recruited a subject (one of my general practice patients) for a friend who was doing child and adolescent psychotherapy training and they both seemed to enjoy the experience, though I'm not sure that the therapist and observed mother becoming good friends was the intention of the exercise.

It’s tricky isn’t it. Who can commit to being in the same place at the same time each week for two years? I’m not even sure I can as an observer.

Interesting that you say they enjoyed it. Quite a few of my colleagues who have done similar say that both they and the mums “get something out of it” but I can’t seem to pin down what that something is

Mrs Jigs (Luverlylegs)
Lesley C’s new thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/support-thread-for-the-parents-of-babies-toddlers-and-young-kids-62550/ reminded me of this thread, quite a while since the last post! Any new babies on the horizon?
