Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I know what you mean about their forum! I don’t really have a decent session low D since I attacked a Kerry with a file 😳, though a Dixon is OK.

I've been playing about with my new alto sax sporadically over the last few weeks. I finally pulled off a few scales and arpeggios this afternoon - G Major, F, Major, and C Major. I think it's time I get a tutor. One of my smaller goals for 2025 is to reach at least a Grade 3 standard, and maybe even take the exam.

There are some intonation problems with the lower register. They're most noticeable when I try to play the D1 (all finger holes covered), and it sounds as a D2, even though my thumb isn't on the octave key and there's been no apparent change in my embouchure. I'll ask at band rehearsal in a couple of weeks about diagnosing the issue.

VP: I’m an oboist rather than sax player, but could be due to a little screw that needs tweaking, or not aiming low enough with diaphragm support.

Probably the latter...it's hard to hit low notes on saxes of any variety when you start out. Start by working your way down from the higher notes on the same register - A, G, F, E then D.

Thanks, RB, Garfield. I've noticed a gradual improvement, to the point where I executed an ascending and descending chromatic scale starting on D1 this afternoon. I can also add D minor, B-flat major, A minor, D major, and E minor to my list of scales/arpeggi.

I should get some clarinet practice in before work.

Hello musical Fetchies...

I've never been able to say "I've got a song out" before today...

...and I still can't :) But my old school/band mate has, and I played bass on it!

It was a bit of an experiment, in that it was written back-to-front - Paul specified a few details, like tempo, song structure in terms of numbers of bars, and a general feel he wanted to aim for, then hired a fantastic drummer in Italy to record the drum track with nothing else to go on! She was quite confused initially, to say the least :)

Then I added a bass line, followed by Paul adding some synths and retro CR-78 percussion. He wrote the lyrics and recruited a vocalist somewhere in midwest America to come up with a melody and record all the vocals. This way, the song evolved in a way none of us could predict.

Finally, Paul added some guitars, and we all chimed in on tweaking the mix before sending it off to Abbey Road Studios for mastering. Amazing how readily accessible technology these days enables this kind of truly international collab, all in our spare time - England, Italy, USA, and Paul in Belgium!

If you're interested, you can hear it in various places:

That’s quit a remarkable collaboration @ishep

I’m liking your bass line. To my ears it has an 80’s disco vibe to it.

Thanks, @Eynsham Red - exactly what I was going for at the time! Never expected it to take the turns it did after that, though! :)

Love it @ishep - bit of a Blondie/Duran Duran vibe, I thought (both = good things :-) ) and I really like the key changes.
