I don't do grades anymore, just know roughly what I am. I took cello up for fun a few years ago, and I don't think grades are fun, so I'm not doing them.

There must be a way to make it fun?
I've never done grades. I did do music half GCSE in school and got a C but didn't need to be able to read music for that.

The girls go to a local *rock* music schoolfor singing and bass guitar lessons. School also does keyboard, drums, guitar and brass. They teach what the kids want to learn- no exams unless they want to take them. Plenty of opportunities to join up with others as part of a band. They cater for adults too. Really missed it during lockdown, looking forward to starting again next week
Also our local samba band is hopefully starting practice again next week. Sooo looking forward to playing again

๐ฎ GCSE music without notereading! That's like GCSE Russian without learning the alphabet.

Most music traditions don't involve notation though.

Self taught (like many guitarists). I canโt read the melody from notation, but I like to use it for timing.

RB, I'm not sure about "most" in present times at least, though of course they don't all look like Brahms.
