I have just bought a load of old control line models and PAW diesel engines, I used to fly these when I was a lad - this could be an interesting and potentially very messy/smelly exercise!

Sounds interesting NE. Is there much work to get the engines and planes up and running?

The planes are actually in very reasonable condition GH, but they have very odd engine bearer spacing - that would have to be modified in order to fit any of the PAW engines and would actually involve some quite serious surgery in a couple of them. I've managed to identify a couple, those are a Veron Bee Bug and a Mercury Junior Monitor. There's also a combat wing that looks very much like an old Dominator from the 60s, but has subtle differences that makes me think it was built from a kit rather than straight off plan. I have no real idea about the integrity of the engines, there are three PAW 1.49s in various states of use, one PAW 2.49 and one PAW 19. I think the bigger engines should be OK, but no idea about the 1.49s. To be honest, I don't know where to start in terms of getting hold of lines, nylon props, fuel etc - it was all a very long time ago. I have my old model field box in the shed, time to dig it out I think! |

I have heard of control line models, but never seen them in action. When I had my first cars as a kid, the difference between "remote control" and "radio controlled" was very important. I felt very grown up when I got my first radio controlled car. Before that it was a controller in your hand but connected by cable. I used to make my own toys too - remote not radio controlled! I would pull a wire coat hanger apart, insert the point end into a toy car and then use the hook end as a steering wheel to "steer" it around on the ground. We didn't have much money! G |

There is something very "connected" about control line and it has its own following, though not on the scale it was back in the day. They fly surprisingly fast, the combat model I mentioned above is going to move at around 70mph. I remember my old "Warlord" used to do 10 laps in about 33 seconds on 52ft lines, so 104ft x 3.142 x 10 = 3267.68ft = 99.02ft per second = 67.5mph

If you're interested btw, do a You Tube search on control line speed models. They are incredible and fly on geared handles with monoline, only possible because of the extreme centrifugal forces and high speeds. The engines have tuned pipes and only come on song at a certain speed, they turn at about 25,000rpm!
