My view on this one is the same as Rich's, so yes, tape while still injured when racing, but stop taping when healed.

...also be aware that ankle injuries can take a long time to heal, and if not allowed this time to heal can become irreparable (spelling? permanently broke is what I mean). The guy I work for just had his entire left ankle joint fused this year, after twenty years of constant chronic pain.
Is that next race REALLY that important?

I've only ever used tape for a knee injury - and then only on professional advice (it was to keep things "aligned"). For an ankle injury, I tried wearing one those bandages/ankle support things. It worked OK for short runs on level ground - which was what I found myself doing for a while but once I started doing a little more, it caused more problems (e.g. blisters) than it solved & so was quickly abandoned. In any event, I agree with Rich on not relying on tape or bandages as a long term measure.
What fell shoes are you using Mud? The ones I was wearing when I turned my ankle over a couple of times in quick succession had quite a narrow sole towards the back of the foot. For several years, I've used NB RX Terrain: the sole at the rear of the foot is quite wide on these shoes - and there's what I can only describe as an "anti roll bar" which means the whole width of the sole offers some support, so you're less likely to turn an ankle I think. At least, I feel a good deal more stable in these than e.g. Walshes.

Thanks for that Will. I am currently using Montrail Highlanders. I couldn't get on with the NB Rx Terrain as I always feltI was about to turn my ankle (ironic or what?). I never had any problems when I was wearing Mudroc 290's so I may be tempted to head back that way. I am going to try the taping route for a while but I will rely more on using the wobble cushion to get things back and working.

Mud...interestingly. I wore my Walshes for the first time in ages last night (purely 'cause I'd forgotten to put my Inov8s in the car!) and I have to say, they felt a lot better in terms of the ankle. The "closeness" to the ground was really apparent and I really felt more stable.Food for thought......
However, I DIDN'T tape up....so my heels are very sore today...and they rubbed my big toe on one side which was really painful!!! One day, there'll be a shoe that just feels perfect. One day......

Hi all, butting in to thread to say there is an attempt on the BGR starting tonight at 8pm - a friend from my hash group here in Devon is up in the Lakes as part of the support team, so if any of you are in the area could you give a holler for me please? Its a first attempt, but he's apparently v. confident (ooh-er!) Keeping my fingers crossed anyway Thanks, do carry on with what you were on about...

It is terrible here right now! When I did my 10-ish kms this morning, up to the ridge and along it for a bit and back down, it was fine, but the wind was picking up. As soon as I emerged from my bathroom, after the run, the clag was down completely, winds are high and it is raining on and off... visibility is awful!
I hope it clears up in the Lakes, if not here in South Wales, as I have a race on Sunday and would love to for a change NOT race under abysmal conditions, like all previous races so far this season!!! Wind, rain and poor to no visibility for all of them!!!
