Hi FR. How's things in the flatlands?
Re. "In the hill-walking arena for a person walking at 5kmh the addition is 1 minute for each 20 m ascent," ... I think it's 1 minute per 10m ascent (pre-metric Naismith said half an hour for every thousand feet). During early hill walking days, I found Naismith's rule a good guide for Scottish hills, which is where it came from after all, but would regularly trash it in the Lakes and especially Black Mountains i.e. terrain does come into it.

But on long runs, I reckon to double rate of ascent - so 30seconds per 10m, 15mins per 300m - but speed depends on terrain - angle of climb, nature of the ground, weather... So don't think it's all that easy to equate!

Mud! You are suffering a streak of bad luck! Hope it improves quickly - perhaps a spell on the wobble board?

Ach Mud, sorry to hear about your ankle :-( That's really tough. Trouble is, once it goes, there's a tendency for it to do so again for a while, as I've been finding out on a lesser scale.

As Bill says, wobble board/flamingo stance will help the proprioception. And personally, I'm trying the "every hour on the fells without going over on the ankle is strengthening it" approach. Means I'm descending like a girl at the moment though ;-) :-) The other thing worth trying is strapping the ankle for a short period to provide additional help. Have you been doing that?

Cheers for the support peeps. The wobble board/cushion will be back out tomorrow or Thursday. Strapping is under consideration for the next race. I felt really good last night until my ankle went. I seem to have got on top of the asthma using the Steroid inhaler regular and using the Ventolin 30 minutes and again at 15 minutes before the start. Was catching and passing people on the hills (Up!) last night. I think I'm going to use the bike a lot over the next 3 weeks along the wobble cushion and see what happens.

I agree with Rich there Mud, strapping it to give it some extra support while it is healing is a good idea! And using the bike to retain fitness is as well...

Descending like a girl Rich???? GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR ;-) you should come out with me one day and I show you how a girl descends!!! :-p
