So many option MPH, mine has a bench seat so 3 in the front and 2 \ 3 in the back. Sleeps 4 on 2 doubles. Price wise depends on the age and model with both old and new costing whatever you want to spend.

I love the idea of this, and with 2 kids who love travelling and I do a fair bit of racing, this seems a superb way of doing it. Better go and do some research!

we had a VW when I was a kid, my dad bought it in 1972 and all our family holidays were spent in it - mum and dad slept in the van and us 3 were in the tent we roamed all over France, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg, mum and dad just booked the ferries and the first night at Abbeville, after that we had a vague plan but if we didn't like somewhere we moved on and if we liked it a lot we stayed longer - all quite hippyish really if the weather was really bad then we did all squash in the van - my older brother and sister in the 2 tiny bunks and me in the boot

HB that sounds like great fun. Luckily for us we don't have to travel for ferries etc being in Dover so it is easy to nip to France etc. hope to do this now

My car pretends to be a campervan sometimes. It's a Berlingo and we've got a conversion kit that we can take in and out. It's quite snug but when you fold it down it's a double bed and when you fold it back up again it's a seating area/table/stove. We mainly use it with an awning as there's not much room in the van for luggage while we're sleeping (OK overnight but less so for a longer trip or with bikes). But then we can take all the stuff out and it's a normal car so it's a good compromise for us.

My 8 year old boy loves it and my 11 month old daughter seems to already love it. So easy just stop sleep \ eat and go again. So easy to travel in France sleeping at Services on Auto-route is free if you can't or don't want to get into a site. After VLM we have every weekend in May planned in the van. Starting with Half way point at the North Dorset Village Marathon for supporting, the following weekend away with running friends in Bridport, then Padstow for the night and treat at Rick Steins, Then camping weekend running the OX Ultra Marathon. Makes every weekend a mini holiday

I've got some serious camper envy. I've always wanted one but at present can't afford one, have nowhere to park one and realistically wouldn't use it enough due to shift work. Deffo on my future wish list though and I am really liking the Berlingo idea as a practical solution when my present car gives up. I just love the sound of that VW engine though!

We use ours as a second car, however always in the camper as its so nice to drive. Already replaced my X3 with a Golf as didn't need a bigger car anymore
